Understanding the needs of people with restricted growth

Hi
I'm a mum of 2 and a gran to 4 lovely children and my greatest desire is to see them grow up and fulfil their wonderful potential, that's why I feel so upset when I see or hear people make fun of others with disabilities.

I have a friend who has recently given birth to her third child, now 6 months old, and he has been diagnosed with achondroplasia (dwarfism). Must be hard for her to come to terms with that, knowing that society at large so often sneers and makes jokes about 'little people'.

The fact is that these people with restricted growth can live 'normal' lives and deserve dignity and respect, just like we all do.

Ricky Gervais has co-written a new comedy. Life's Too Short, soon to be shown on BBC2. My question is, "Should we be laughing at little people?" Should the BBC be airing stuff like this? I'd love to know what you all think about this.

Perhaps you'd like to check out a facebook page that has been set up to campaign against the airing of this so-called comedy. Here's the link:

Please take a look and 'like' the page if you want to support the campaign.

I wonder if this is something that Mumsnet has given any attention to in the past. Achondroplasia is a rare disorder, and so much can be achieved if society at large is educated to understand the causes of the condition, and the needs of sufferers, as well as appreciate the feelings of their families.

I hope that mumsnet readers will take a look and if you feel as strongly as I do, then please get behind these 'little people' and show them you care.

Thank you so much.
