I found this book challenging because of some of the sub-plots, particularly the young girls who travel to England for 'a better life'. I thought the teacher's story was interesting as I have experienced some of the situations he describes. I thought it dealt with many social issues, often honestly (even if this is slightly unpalletable). A rather negative yet recognisable depiction of our country. I am glad that I read this book, even though I found it unpleasant in places.
