Just seen this, thanks Andi!

No one has anything to say??

Come on, I know you've read it!

I would have walked straight past it in the library, but did enjoy it.
I have unanswered questions after finishing it, which I don't like (I do like all the loose ends to be tied up and don't feel they were).

mrswoodentop · 26/08/2010 18:49

Well its a while since I finished it now ,but it was strange I really thought I would like it especially as I know the area it was set in and the period is about about the period I was there but somehow I didn't.I found the main character a bit odd, although he did grow on me a bit as the book went on.
I thought the period details were drawn very well especially the meals etc.

Glad I've read it but I did have to rather force myself to continue with it but it must have made an impression on me because I have thought about it quite a bit since .

P.S.have namechanged used to be bourboncreme

It has been a while since I read it and I did enjoy it. I would not have chosen it so thank you Meg for the suggestion.
I will look out for other books by David Mitchell - has anyone read any others?

sungirltan · 27/08/2010 19:45

i am about to start this - was forced upon me by mother. will report back but can i join for next book?

MegBusset · 29/08/2010 23:31

Just finished!

I've read a couple of others by Mitchell (Cloud Atlas (also v good), Number 9 Dream) but this was by far the 'straightest', and the one I've enjoyed the most. I thought the tone and references were spot-on and it was very atmospheric.

MegBusset · 29/08/2010 23:39

Jas interested to hear what your unanswered questions were...

androbbob · 31/08/2010 22:26

Well after reading this I fell upon another one of his in the library - Cloud Atlas, but couldnt get into it.

Black Swan Green was a relatively straightforward book to read - kind of described the year in the life of the 13 year old boy. I did enjoy it, but wondered about the old lady in the house in the middle of the wood and also poetry thing with the other old lady - that seemed a bit odd and disjointed from the rest of the book - just seemed a bit pointless.

As a child of the 80's it did bring back memories of my childhood and I felt sympathy for the main character and his stammer / bullying. It did seem though that the main charaters were a bit predictable - stereotypical!

At the end of the book, I did not feel that it had come to a satisfactory conclusion - not sure what was missing, but something was.

Having said that - an ehjoyable easy read!

I couldn't get into this book, persevered but found the 'voice' really annoying. i think the writer meant tthe reader to find him annoying, perhaps, but I didn't really enjoy it. I also didn't like the ending.
