I became a lone parent to 3 school aged kids 3 weeks ago.
I have accepted the split and that xh is with ow. Now I want to focus on making new friends (male and female, with or without kids)who are not friends with xh. I have had limited success at school. There are friendly mums who I can have quick chats with but Im after people to hang out with in real life. My MN Local board is almost post less with no meet ups ever and I can't really afford socialising in the nearest big cities (London and Birmingham)
Thanks
Do you have any particular interests or hobbies with local classes?
Three weeks is really recent. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to recover and heal before feeling you have to be getting back out there.
I think you just have to take the plunge with a mum and ask if they want to go for a coffee sometime.
Or do something like volunteering or a class while they are at school.
You might strike it lucky and meet some interesting people.
Sorry, by saying 'getting back out there' I didn't mean dating, just the social scene!
Am in a similar position but have been much less proactive, life is just dcs and work.
Is there an exercise class you could go to or a meetup on meetup perhaps.
I have just joined my local Rock Choir as a way of meeting people.
Ooooh I love the idea of a rock choir!
There are rock choirs all over the country I found mine through the national website. Ironically they are singing 'Proud' currently. I had a great time and did something just for me.
SchmaltzingMatilda, thanks I am in a similar situation and have never heard of the meet up site, so I have just registered with my local group.
50shadesofvomit, good luck and hope you meet some new friends soon.
Toddlers, I've registered and then done nothing about it! [hangs head in shame/idleness]]. I guess it's like anything, you have to put the effort into making it work and ignore any initial setbacks...but am terrible at taking my own advice. It's a shame MN local isn't more active really - mine's Marie Celeste.
Thanks everyone.
I have registered with meet ups and had a look and went to pick up the kids early (rather than 1 minute before chucking out time) to chat longer with the mums.
Just wanted to say that I have really put myself out there to meet new people and also nurture the ones that fell aside whilst I was with XP.
Meetup is great, I have been on a few things and it's just interesting to meet different people and do different things.
Bit of an update...
I joined the local Zumba class which was good as it had ladies of a similar age (plus a great instructor) and have been picking up the children earlier and chatting in the playground. I will keep a lookout on Meetups for appealing events but most seem to be drink ups for blokes.
Well I went to my first meet up on Wednesday, sat next to someone who is a member of my gym and we have swapped numbers. I have also suggested a new event, going to see live band in March.
SchmaltzingMatilda / 50shadesofvomit, why don't you suggest an event on a meetup and see what response you get.
Good luck
well done!
I've just been reading this thread and have had a look on meet up, I'd never heard of it before. There's a group local to me meeting up at a bar in my village for a quiz in a couple of weeks, and I might pluck up the courage to go. Does anyone else find it really daunting though going somewhere on their own? I'm really scared of doing it! But I feel I've got to do something, I'm going mad at home all the time. Plus, I saw a psychic last year and she said I'd meet someone at a quiz, think its a load of tosh probably but you never know!
Am inspired to be brave by you others taking the plunge and getting out there :-)
