Hi,

Has anyone any experience with bringing your family dog when you move abroad? Especially to Japan.

How expensive is it? How much does it limit your rental choices?

Thanks for any help you can offer Smile

I think every country is different. 6 years ago we brought a dog to Australia. Cost about $7000. Wouldn't do it again. Dogs here live outside . Was hard to get a rental where they were allowed inside.

I have an expat dog (and cat!) and we are all about to embark on our third international move. It is very expensive, and you have to time everything just right, which is a bit of a nightmare. But it's worth it IMHO.

Japan is very geared towards pets and we had no problem with accommodation, best to ask though. They're more used to very small dogs, so it may depend on the landlord and the breed of your dog.

We have an expat dog. He is on his fourth country, nineth home and he is only 6 years old. He loves his life (as far as i can tell). He speaks three languages, Russian, French and English.

Japan is possibly our next move, so marking place here.

Goodluck OP, am sure your dog will love it. Freaking expensive having an expat dog BTW (flights, taxes, vet checks, vaccines etc).

Just sell it and get another one from the pound when you get to Japan. It'll be cheaper..........just kidding.

Main cost is the flight and the quarantine if you need it- some countries recognise rabies control laws, some dont. Your employer may pay these costs- ours did for our 2 cats. However, thats another thing to check. Another issue is where exactly you're likely to be living. If you're in a high rise apartment in Tokyo, would the dog be happy not having a garden? Would you be happy taking it out for a pee 6x a day?

One "cost" issue for people with pets in HK is that if you need a garden, these come at a large premium as very few houses.

Bumping this vintage thread for recent advice. Anyone else done a move abroad with pets?

We have one dog, 9kg, and the move is from Manchester to Denmark. Is it as expensive as everyone says? :(

Manchester to Denmark is cheap. My dad takes his dogs via car though because they are large and don't do well in the hold. 18 months ago he paid £500 each way. Taking them by car took 2 days of driving and cost about £300 for car plus dogs.
