Legal rights concerning ex tenants belongings

I could do with some advice regarding ex tenant, and his belongings. Last May we had a tenant move into our house, he was a friend and we subletted part of our home to him. He put in a claim to housing benefit and got the first cheque in his name with 8 weeks rent backdated, that was in July. He then ran off with the money, giving us a whole range of excuses as to why we didn't have the money. He finally turned up in late August without the money and took some of his belongings with him saying he would return for the rest of his furniture in a couple of weeks. We are still waiting, I have tried to contact him regarding his belongings on many occasions and he still hasn't replied. We could seriously now do with the space but are unsure as to what our rights are if we got rid of it all. Can anyone advise? TIA
