Bequesting/gifting a copyright

A friend currently owns the copyright/publishing rights to 2 books and yesterday offered to either leave them to me in his will or, if his plans to move out of the country work out, gift the rights to me.

I am unsure of what this would mean. It's not something I know anything about or have ever thought about so I am completely clueless.

Would it just be something that I would hold forever? And would it just be occasional requests to use pictures/passages?

I don't want to accept it without fulling understanding what it would mean as I would want to look after it properly
