4 kids; ditching 7 seater for small car + ocassional rental when all 6 need to travel

7 seater knackered - I find that I drive it empty most of the time as I work full time and kids get themselves to school and are more independently mobile now anyway....so an unnecessary expense on fuel was thinking that we could cope with swapping to a small car and using mine and husbands if we needed to go on a local journey altogether - and then just hiring 7 seater for holidays occassional weekends away -- any thoughts?

We have 4DCS 11,9,7 & 4 and we currently have 2 cars a golf and a superb, one estate one saloon and when we are all going out together we use both cars. We are off on holiday in half term will be travelling from NW all the way to Lands End and we are taking 2 cars, we can actually fit all 6 bikes on them easily this way. We can fit all we need to take with us in 2 cars and actually it is only the same mpg as a normal 7 seater. Yes would be nice to have a 7 seater but my DH works away a lot, will be gone at the end of the year for just over 6 months, so for now the 2 cars works for us. The only time it annoys me is when we are nipping to the supermarket all together and have to take 2 cars, the shorter journeys really get to me the long ones really don't bother me. Maybe I just like not having to put up with 10 hours in a car with 4DC and a DH, this way its only 2DC each grin

watching with interest as our 7 seater is on its last legs and I was wondering if it would be cheaper to get a smaller car to try and save money.

Still not made a decision yet but tbh we only all travel in the car maybe a dozen times a year, usually its just me and the dcs as dh is never able to leave the farm

The fiat multipla or honda frv is small and has 6 seats. With a pod on you can go on holiday with plenty stuff.

Doesn't Juule on here with 9+ kids have only a 5 seater?
We managed with a 5 seater for 2 years after the birth of DC4.
I would go back to that in a flash, it's DH who likes 7 seater. hmm
I have it in my head that Touran has pop-up seats if you only very rarely need > 5 seats.

as long as you have seats for all of you ( in 2 cars ) it ahouldnt be a problem at all .

i rember been 14 ( eldist of 3 ) and my dad sold the family car and bought a 4 seater sports car , i felt so rejected !! like i wasnt allowded to go out with them any more .

been a mum to 6 iv allways said my car will have seats for all of them forever!
