Anyone? I hope I can stay up -- have been going to bed early. I really really want to watch it.

Ok people, 5 hours to go. Is anyone going to watch it?

Did you read The Onion this week? V funny esp here . Salon even had it linked today on its War Room. (While babbling, can I ask when the Guardian and Salon linked up? I love it, but sometimes get excited to read about the same thing from a similar angle and it's the exact same thing)

Bush vs Kerry. First debate of three.

Has been billed as make or break for Kerry.

1am your time, I think. It'll be on CNN (I don't have many English language channels) .. I'm guessing it should be on many news channels with international coverage. ??

Should be interesting. I don't want to have to read the commentary tomorrow without seeing the debate, plus I'm going back home (to the US) for a couple of weeks in a week or so. My parents are Republicans...

JJ - you don't have to answer - but who are your rooting for? - what's the feeling about Bush in the US at the mo?

I'm for Kerry! Not sure of the mood in the US atm, we're in Switzerland. But this is really the first time that many (most??) overseas voters are for the Democrat, so things are odd, esp on the foreign policy front. Even the Army TImes has come out with criticism for Bush -- very unusual as he's the Commander in Chief. Don't know if they've made an endorsement of either one, though.

I think it's 2am UK time, because I'm pretty sure it's 9pm here. Does that make it 3am in Switzerland?

The feeling I get in Florida is that, while most people aren't that interested because we've had other stuff to think about recently, Bush seems to be favored. I'm worried that he's going to win a 2nd term. I think Kerry really has to do something good to stand a chance. And of course Bush has such low expectations for the debates that Kerry is expected to kick his a$$, so Bush can't lose.

In the US peopole don't really understand why Bush is so hated around the rest of the world. I was talking about this with my neighbor yesterday. Even my mum, who has always voted Conservative, thinks Bush is an idiot, and would prefer to see a Democratic president.

I just wish the Democratic party had picked a better candidate. Too many swing voters don't think anything of him. Personally, if I was allowed to vote, I would vote for Kerry anyway, because the basic republican vs. democrat issues are the most important (freedom of choice, gun control etc.) to me. But there are an awful lot of people who will vote depending on whether they personally like the candidate himself. People don't think much of Kerry but Bush is seen as a strong leader.

argh, yes, it would make it 3am for me.

I'm watching old X Files and already trying to stay up.

KatG, who was the better candidate? I have to admit to being a Howard Dean fan, but love Kerry (I adore his wife).. maybe Edwards was the better candidate, though? I like him too. I liked most of them, tbh. Just hope Kerry wins now.

That's the question, jj.

My SIL who is one of those swing voters, I think will end up voting for Bush because she doesn't like Kerry. She thinks Edwards is great though, so if he had been the nominee she may well have voted for him.

We were talking about Rudy Gulliani the other day, and she was very surprised that I wouldn't vote for him if he ran for president (she would be knocking on doors to promote him!). I think Rudy is great and I would much prefer him over Bush, but he's still a Republican...

KateandtheGirls - found your post quite interesting cos if you'd have subsituted Howard for Kerry in your arguments and Blair for Bush - its a fair representation of my feelings of the next General Election and I wish the Tories had picked a better candidate! Also agree that there's too much of the 'oh I like him so he gets my vote' mentality here too!

I thought Kerry came off brilliantly, but then who wouldn't against that buffoon! Bush made it easy pickings for anyone with half a brain to get the upper hand.

Has anyone heard the rumor that Bush had an earpiece in so that his handlers could feed him talking points during the first debate?
