It is a terrible thing to have happened.
However, I am HUGELY cheered by the fact that there is such a public outcry in India. Horrific things have been happening to women there (and elsewhere, of course) for a long time with nobody giving a rat's arse very little political, social or media attention.

Strumpetpumpkin in developing countries when you are an educated woman with a middle or upper class family you are somewhat removed from the reality and can't fathom it happening to you. I have seen many reports of female govt officials blaming girls who get raped saying well if they are out at night what do they expect, or they must have incited the men in some way. Is absolutely despicable.
I think this case has grabbed the headlines because she is a university student so it hits close to home for many women.
I have stopped reading about this story now as the amount of cases and the brutality is just incredible. I can't believe people are so helpless in the face of these brutes.

i occasionally read times of india and there is story after story of rape, abuse, hideous stuff. Its endemic. Yesterday it was a 3 year old girl raped. The other week, it was about a 5 year old girl who was boiled alive by people in a protection racket.
I wonder why this story has grabbed the worlds headlines. I wonder if it was because she was an english speaking middle class woman
whatever its absolutely horrific, but its always strange how certain stories make the news and others dont

There have been a few very shocking rape cases in India which has lead the whole country to look at the matter with the seriousness it deserves.

However looking at some indian local forums today I was just shocked that in a matter of a few days people are now questioning why a girl was out watching a movie at night!! Can't believe it.
