Bradford by election has Galloway beaten Labour?

EdithWeston · 29/03/2012 23:57

The count hasn't finished, but The Labour List website is reporting that Labour MPs are admitting that they have lost their 5,000+ majority and that George Galloway is the winner.

I've no seen anything on the figures for the Coalition parties. But if these predictions are right, then it's a bad night for Labour.

If any insomniac MNetters (or those in other time zones) see the result as it comes in (probably in next hour or so), would you be kind and add it to this thread?

Turn out is reported as very, very low. And Tory vote well down (not heard anything about Lib Dem), but that'll be cold comfort to the Labour party if Galloway has taken the seat (as seems likely right now, but it's not certain yet).

Surely not. Would you vote for someone who appears on BB and drinks milk
from a saucer?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 30/03/2012 00:51

Yes.

There is far more to Mr Galloway than BB.

youngermother1 · 30/03/2012 01:01

true

I'm on a iPad, wish I could link to the youtube coverage of his 2005 statement to the US Senate. Google his name and "US Senate".

He won www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17549388

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 30/03/2012 02:40

Yay, go George! Parliament needs renegades.

Al0uise · 30/03/2012 05:59

He's hardly a renegade.

EdithWeston · 30/03/2012 06:36

Wow! He not only won, but he's inflicted a really humiliating defeat on Labour (who had won this seat every election since 1974). Galloway's majority is twice that of Labour in 2010.

Labour and Conservatives both down by a bit over 20% (though this I far worse for Labour, as the expectations were so different). Galloway describes it as "total rejection" of the established party system.

I feel a little sorry for the people of Bradford. On past performance he'll spend the next three years pursuing his own agenda & grandstanding on issues that are nothing to do with a corner of West Yorkshire

EdithWeston · 30/03/2012 07:51

THe forecasts I noted beforeon turnout were wrong. It was about 50% - unusually high for a by election, though down from the 65% at the General Election.

Pundit on BBC was saying this is the worst by election performance by any Opposition party in decades.

This has now cropped up in AIBU and there's a thread in chat too.

I really objected to the Respect representative on the Today Programme who said she fully supported 'resistance' against British troops in Afghanistan. Vile.

Not a good day for any gays or Jews living in Bradford :(.

chipstick10 · 30/03/2012 14:22

Agreed Orwellian hes on a par with the vile Red Ken imho

EdithWeston · 30/03/2012 14:28

It's interesting that he thinks that the protest vote against the war is still a decisive factor.

But he's probably spot on when he says that Labour cannot count on their traditional working class support any more.

The low vote for the Government parties was to be expected - it really is the norm for a mid-term election. But the collapse of Labour was a surprise; they had(misplaced) confidence right up to yesterday that they would hold the seat. So not only have they failed to win what should have been a safe seat, they must also be in internal disarray that they did not notice it as a possibility.
