How to find other home educators (consolidated)

This is a topic that we can bump up to make the info easy to find. If you want to ask about a specific area of the country, please do not post on this thread (the regulars are unlikely to read it) but start a new one.

If you join Education Otherwise (£25pa), you will receive a national contact list, divided by county. On the web they have lists of:

  • local groups
  • Internet lists

Home Education UK has similar but not identical information:

  • local groups
  • Internet lists

EHEers here will provide advice but we recommend that you try to meet local EHEers. They know about meetings in your area and can give more specific advice on your LA. They will also help you to see that EHEers are normal people doing their best for their kids, just like you. You'll also see that people are successfully EHEing kids right across the range from SEN to prodigy and with all sorts of issues.

Thanks for doing the consolidating!

There is also HEdMap which shows flags on a map of the UK where some of the HE groups can be found, and contact details for them.

Does Education Otherwise cover Scotland?

Marjoriew · 26/05/2010 15:04

I think the organisation for Scotland is called SchoolHouse Home Education.
It's the equivalent of EO here.

SDeuchars · 26/05/2010 15:10

Schoolhouse is at www.schoolhouse.org.uk/.

It's worth knowing that just because a particular HE website doesn't show any groups in your area, that doesn't mean there are no HE families near you! Don't give up hope. Some groups have little or no web presence and you may need to do some networking to find them. If you locate a group or email list covering an area a little distance away, try asking them. It's quite likely that someone there will know someone closer to you.

Another method if you seem to be hitting a brick wall, is to post on a busy national home ed list. On a busy list, people won't read every post so make sure the title of your post will catch the eye of somebody who can help you, e.g. "Looking for Southampton contacts."

In my area - near Crouch End -sticking up a notice in the childrens library in either Archway of Hornsey Library - with an email address asking for contacts would be well worth trying. Might work elsewhere as well.
