So, we discovered that chipmunks and ice age 3 are play on the go so you get a code and can load them into iTunes but that is all from our DVD collection. Is there a way of getting ordinary DVDs which we have bought, onto the iPad for our own viewing?

You need software to convert DVDs to the iPad format. I use DVD Catalyst 3 (I think 4 is latest version). There are others but this is the one I use.
Some DVD companies put Digital Protection measures on their disks. For those you need another piece of software that 'rips' DVDs, strips out the protection and creates a DVD folder on your PC. You then run DVD Catalyst against the folder as opposed to the DVD itself. I use a product called Any DVD.
Don't ask me why there isn't one piece of software that strips out the protection AND converts to iPad/Media player format
DVD Catalyst handles 99.99% of DVDs so I suggest you forget about buying Any DVD or similar unless it becomes a problem for you.
Once you have the converted file you go into iTunes and take > File > Add file to library.
