that Dh and obsessed 5 yr old can enjoy together?
Ooh, DanFmDorking knows this stuff, and posted about it on the ISS (International Space Station) thread in December, IIRC.

Actually, I would say dont buy a scope just yet. If you DH is a noob then it may be better to get a planisphere and a pair of binoculars - say 10 x 50 - and get out and enjoy the night sky.
The reason is that a halfway decent scope will start from about 200 notes and that may or may not include the mount (tripod). You can pick up a package for cheaper ..... But the scope may put you off for life! Oh and a pair of 10 x 50's will cost about £30. a planisphere will be a tenner.
But it's a really lovely thing to do! Let's us know how you get along.

Thanks. It's really my DS mostly. He is obsessed with Jupiters moons and Saturn and DH thinks he should give him a chance to see them himself. (he has autism)
I'd prefer they visited a telescope or somewhere that you can do these things ( is there anywhere like that?)

We have a 'proper' telescope and TBH it's a pain to set up. We tend to use our birdwatching bins and scope - were able to see Jupiters moons. I think for a small child there is some advantage to having a tripod because the adult can get it lined up properly.
Maybe you could find a local astronomical society - that might well get you in touch with an enthusiast who would be only too willing to feed your DSs obsession!

Ahh now well I have seen Jupiter's moons through my 10 x 50s but it was a struggle. Must keep them very still. Not sure a 5 year old could do it.
Actually, if you could stretch to £110, the Meade Ngc 70 az has scored well in the sky at night mag review (nov 2010). Will be fine for jupiters moons I would think.
Great idea though, go to a star party or go to the royal astronmical society website for local groups. Or pm me with your location and I will look for you.
