Well I call it farinata but I'm not sure it is a true farinata which I think is Italian, whereas I sort of bosh together a vaguely Indian sort of thing. A variation exists in lots of countries.

Whisk 3 cups of gram flour (chickpea flour) into 4 cups of warm water and leave for a few hpurs.
Scoop off the scum.
Mix in a goodly slosh of olive oil - not as much as half a cup, but more than a couple of tablespoons, and some salt.
Add whatever you want (eg red onion & thyme, or coriander, chili & cumin, or... well you get the idea, flavour it somehow)
Start it off in a frying pan on the top and finish it under the grill.

It's a sort of pancake I guess - quite dense. I shall cut it into squares and serve at room temp.

Sounds lovely, can I come? grin

Also wants to know what is a farinata?

What is a farinata?

moderateorgood Sat 23-Mar-13 04:35:08

Thank you all. Sorry - had to abandon thread.

I realised that what I am really after is a replacement for my pita filled with feta and masses of flat leaf parsley, grilled, that I usially do. Can't do them - pita in main meal.

Anyway, have settled on artichoke dip with crudites, some good olives, and a red onion farinata.

Appreciate all your suggestions.

(Pimped) cream cheese piped into sugar snap pea pods?

Those little round hot peppers stuffed with balls of cheese?

Small lettuce leaf as a base then mix together finely chopped red onion, cucumber, tomato, lemon juice, tamarind paste, coriander and chickpeas place a small spoon of the mix on each leaf then spoon over a little mango chutney. Before serving sprinkle with a little Bombay mix.

I had some delicious risotto balls as canapés. They were initially served warm but are nice cold too! <greedy>

Small potatoes, baked, and served with either dips, or split with a dollop of sour cream and chive blobbed on.

Many many ideas for cracker +things if that's acceptable - what;s the issue with bread - allergies or just too much wheaty stuff elsewhere?

Is pastry ok? Lots of possibilities here - mini tarts, cheese straws etc etc

Cheese and pineapple on sticks stuck in an orange wrapped in foil grin

Bocconcini (small ball of cheese similar to mozorella), sun dried tomato and a basil leaf on a toothpick.

moderateorgood Fri 22-Mar-13 17:47:17

I suppose a small cracker might not count as bread.
Quails eggs a good idea.
Sushi doesn't really fit with the other food.
Celery / cheese & pineapple not impressive enough.
Nuts... could do a spiced nuts mix maybe..?

AnythingNotEverything Fri 22-Mar-13 17:43:43

All canapés should be small enough to not need a plate. They should e a mouthful.

If you don't have bread, what would the filling sit on? Maybe bits of celery with humous on? What about a small cracker? Does that count as bread?

WishIdbeenatigermum Fri 22-Mar-13 17:43:42

Quails eggs
Nuts
Inches of celery with cream cheese
Cheese and pineapple on a stick
Sushi with cucumber/ avocado/ red pepper
Olives

moderateorgood Fri 22-Mar-13 17:40:14

It must be easily eaten with fingers (a bowl or plate on the table for people to help themselves)
It can't be bread or bread based or include bread of any sort
It must be vegetarian
It must be cold
It must be made in advance

Any ideas?
