We collect windfalls in the garden all summer, evict the wasps from the holes, chop up and stew for the winter. Very Little House On The Prairie! Around our way, lots of people put out baskets and boxes of windfalls by their gates for others to help themselves. I haven't been to a communal barn raising, though. (Although we were once all called upon to help the farmer behind us lift a hot tub over the neighbour's fence with his front loader.)

I am making apple pie. Stewed apples put in the freezer in the autumn, made a sweet short crust tonight and put it in the fridge. Will bake tomorrow.
