Mirena coil and sleep problems

I had a coil fitted just over a week ago and am now having trouble sleeping. I wake up feeling as if I've had a big sleep but then realise it's still the middle of the night and I can't get back to sleep. I'm wiped out. Could this just be a coincidence or have others experienced this too? And if the latter did it sort itself out and how long did it take?

I have had mine fitted just over a week ago too and (touch wood!) havent had any problems yet. Have had to take my usual mini-pill alongside it too for a week and this will be the first day I havent had to take it so that is strange for me too.

Thanks Seona, I'm generally happy with mine too - it wasn't too painful having it fitted and although I've still got spotting I only had a couple of days of cramps. I just don't know if its whats causing my sleeping problems ...

I had a coil fitted in november and got it taken out last week march 20th. In the four months i had it in i noticed a rapid weight gain, along with other symptoms and my weight has always been the same in the past 12years, i eat heatlhy and go to the gym twice a week. I noticed that my stomach looked blotted and arms were getting big. So decided that it was not right for me.

Hello Inthemoment. I had a Mirena coil fitted in April (it's Sept) as a fibroid was giving me terrible periods. It's certainly fixed the bleeding but yes, I wake up most nights for hours with really savage, miserable thoughts running through my head, unstoppably. I'm wasted the next day. It began just after the coil was fitted and I'm seriously thinking about having it out or investigating some kind of oestrogen patch to counter the effects. I'm a really cheerful person normally but I'm beginning to dread night times.

I know this an old post but I'm having the same issue - waking at 4 / 5am in a blind panic. It's only been in a week but I've made an apt to have it removed next week. Two weeks is the maximum I'm prepared to do this for!

Hi June. I’m glad I saw your recent post. I had the coil fitted on Tuesday and since the end of last week I can’t sleep, when I do drift off it’s only for an hour and then I’m wide awake again. I feel terrible. I’m also very constipated which again I’m not sure is a side effect. Have you had yours removed and if so are you sleeping again?

I actually pulled it out myself in desperation at 4am one morning! Saw my consultant a few days later and she agreed it does affect some women who are particularly sensitive to progesterone.

I feel much better in myself now. I have started bleeding again (I had the Mirena fitted after a D&C for adenomyosis). I'll happily take the bleeding over the insomnia and anxiety though Confused

I believe the official line is that Mirena doesn't affect mood but both my gynaecologist and a girlfriend who is a consultant psychiatrist have now told me they believe it can.

Good luck.

Ouch that sounds painful but I don’t blame you, I’ve not had mine a week yet and I already hate it. I usually suffer with a bit of insomnia when I’m due but this is on another level. I’m going to give it a few more days and then think about speaking to the doctor. Interesting they said it can affect certain women and since having my son I’ve noticed I’m a lot more sensitive to things.
Thanks for getting back to my post. I’m glad you’re feeling better and I agree, I’d rather bleed than have these side effects.

I had one fitted during a hysteroscopy examination just over a week ago. I had previously avoided having one, but prolonged heavy periods with a fibroid made me desperate and I agreed to try it.

I can feel that my moods have generally dipped more than usual, and I do just have a permanent feel of PMT with increased anxiety levels and less sleep. I'm going to give it another few weeks until a check-up I have booked with the GP on 10th January. Then if I am not feeling better I will press to have it removed and argue more forcefully for a hysterectomy instead. I've had all of the "give it 6 - 9 months to settle" spiel, but nobody wants to feel like this for that long if it is avoidable, surely.

I'm only willing to give it that long because I also currently have a chest infection, which isn't helping anything and I want to see if things improve when that fades.

I’m 6 weeks into having the coil and I’ve noticed a difference in my mood and feelings of anxiety seem to be bubbling away. I’m also constantly tired even though, on the whole, my sleep hasn’t been that bad.
I bled quite heavily for 3 weeks but thankfully that seems to have stopped.
I’m going to give it another 6 weeks and if my mood doesn’t improve I think I’ll have it out. No-one warns you of all these side affect and having this coil doesn’t seem worth all the pain.

I had kyleena fitted in October 2018. I started having sleepless nights from December 2018 onwards. Went to GP and he gave me some sleeping pills. I took for about 10 days. But my insomnia got worse. Yesterday my GP adviced me to get kyleena removed. I would never advice any women to get hormonal coils. They ruin your sleep. I have a very comfortable life. But Kyleena has ruined my life. I m going to get it removed tomorrow.

Thank you to the ladies that posted their stories in relation to sleep issues with the Mirena. I had insomnia for about two months after having a Mirena fitted. I consulted several doctors and nurses, they all assured me the Mirena would not be contributing to this.
Your postings are the only reason I had the Mirena removed, within two days I could sleep!
The health professionals told me sleep issues were not a side effect of the Mirena. My partner researched this, he could only find one study. It showed that there were some sleep issues reported. It appears sleep has not been studied beyond this one study. To say the Mirena doesn't effect sleep because it hasn't been proven to effect sleep is not fair as it hasn't been proven to not effect sleep!!

I had the mirena coil fitted 6 days ago as a treatment alternative to HRT progesterone tablets. Since then my sleep has deteriorated rapidly to the point where I can’t put up with it. Even worse, hot flushes have returned , so it’s doing what exactly? Annoyed and knackered.

Is that the one with the hormone lining in it?

You are right and that of what those you mentioned who said the same. A GP also told me, because i already have problems where my mood is concerned, that he would not be inclined to want to give me the mini pill for example, because the Progesterone could affect my mood further.

Thank you for all of your posts. I'm three weeks in with this thing and it does not agree with me. Sick of the pain and the bleeding and want my body back! I'm awake every morning at 2.49 then can't get back to sleep for at least an hour. I have had to take sleeping pills twice but they are not having their usual desired effect. I'm sure this is the coil and when you know you know. It sucks!

Will let the doctor know I'd like it removed when I go for my check up in two weeks.
