Ex-teachers - what do you do now?

Gave up primary teaching a while ago (only did a year of my NQT year) and have done various education-related jobs since then, but I'd like to go towards a term-time only job/career in the next few years.

What do you other ex-teachers do, especially if you are still in something education-related which is just term-time only? I can just really imagine it being so worth it when DS is at school and I can see him for all the holidays.

how about NVQ assessor assessing teaching assistants. Very up and coming sector.

I write educational materials for publishing and do training. Basically a freelance educational consultant. Training is term time only but the book stuff is anytime.

delirious123 & Thandeka - they both sound interesting, how did you get into those things from teaching?

delirious - I know an ex-head who does this. She said she finds it engrossing and worthwhile.

[not me but] I know someone who works for one of the examination agencies (not examining directly though). You'd have to live nearby one. Quite good training, development and salaries etc..

If you worked for an examination agency, wouldn't it be full time rather than term-time?

I'm re-training to be a counseller.

I kind of fell into it. Got well known in my field had some stuff published in the TES then publishers contacted me from that. Then I went part time at work and did 2 days a week consultancy- then found I had too much work so I just handed in my notice.

You do need a niche though. A years primary teaching may not be enough for training but probably would be to write teaching materials.

A few people who I know/know of who used to be teachers but do work that is term-time work:
-School librarian (ours took librarian qualifications only after being in the job a few years)
-House mistress - looks after boarders
-Tumbletots franchise
-TA
-Prepares materials & delivers online & 1-2-1 lessons for school phobics/pg teenagers
