My ds is in Year one, is 6.5 and seems to be in the top set and doing generally ok. The school don't volunteer data on where a child is the year and/or how they are doing in line with nc standards.
I'm uncertain what to ask in parental interviews. They never seem to tell me anything that I don't know about my son....
Any ideas? What do you guys ask in parental interviews?

In our school, I have noticed a distinct difference between infant and junior parents' evenings. Infants are mainly to do with how the child is settling, and any problems. Juniors is more about academic work etc.
I think that, if there is not much to say, then it is because al is well.

I just let them tell me how the children are doing
Is it an independent school? We don't have top sets in year one where I am
you could ask them what level your DS is working towards....by the time they are in start Juniors the National average is around a level 2. By the time they leave primary an average is level 4 (this is then split into 1a,1b,1c a being the highest) Hope this helps.......
