Divorce/separation

Legality of divorce in country outside UK/EU (after couple married in UK/EU)

I don't know if anyone can help with this one. My relative married a woman in the UK. He is from UK with UK/EU passport. She is from a country outside the EU - as it happens a South American country.

They then moved to the South American country and split up. They obtained a divorce in this country. Now they are moving back to the UK.

Are they still married?

This sounds a bit like an exam question but it's not! My instinct is that they are still married but can anyone help at all? Or if not help, tell me how I can find out? Is it Home Office? Thanks.

The divorce will be recognised in the UK provided it is a civil divorce in the South American country.
