i have never written anything before (nothing serious at least) and would love to enter a writing competition just for the fun of it.
what competition is a good one to enter for a beginner? I do love writing and it is my dream to one day write a book.
I have a few weeks before i need to start on my next essay for my uni work so this would be a good little project to work on for the next few weeks
any recommendations?

Try some listing websites:
Prizemagic
Sally Quilford's Competition Calendar
JBWB
You can either enter small comps or be ambitious and throw your hat into the big ones. If you regularly google, you can find some free ones - Writers and Artists' Yearbook have one a year, as do The Guardian. Sadly passed now but best to google....

Technically it is a flash - so make sure you google flash competitions. There are a fair amount of them. Good luck!

Where do live - anywhere near Cheshire? Or have your worked or studied there. Or possibly even just passed through once on the way to somewhere more interesting (like Shropshire - ha). If so then there's this

Great comp but it is for children's stories - which is a whole different ball game....

ah never been in or near cheshire ever in my life. Ive never considered a children's story before. I cant believe how many writing comps there are! and i cant believe i have never considered entering one before now. Im not a brilliant writer by any means and have never written anything to be published - as yet, but its something i really enjoy doing. This is going to be my new hobby!
