AstraZeneca vaccine - really sore, swollen arm 4 days on

Just posting for some reassurance really. I had my vaccine on Friday lunchtime. Felt fine all day Friday. Saturday had a sore arm at the injection site and felt pretty rough all day. Since Sunday I've felt fine other than my arm, which is red, has a hard lump under the skin, is swollen and hot to touch at the injection site. It's itchy too.

My cousin said she had a sore arm for 5 days or so, but trying to work out if this is a common reaction and when I can expect my arm to go back to normal. It's bloody sore and annoyingly I sleep on that side too.

Anyone else had this?

My arm was really sore for about 8 days - like couldn’t sleep on that side, couldn’t lean on it sore. Then on the 9th day it just didn’t hurt at all!
This was my first dose.

Thanks @ChilliChaos, good to know I don't need to panic yet! Everything I could find online suggests symptoms would last a couple of days and so far it's showing no signs of the pain or swelling decreasing!

I had a large lump and large red area for up to a week before it started going down. Was quite worried so used the online service my doctors has to ask about it. Was told normal to use cold compresses and paracetamol. The lump took nearly 3 weeks to go.

DinosaurDiana · 17/03/2021 07:39

Have you taken antihistamines ?

Madmog · 17/03/2021 07:45

My DH had the same about four days after for a few days. It's absolutely fine now.

Seeline · 17/03/2021 07:48

Mine was really sore for a week, and I was still aware of it for another. Three weeks on and I can't feel a lump any more.

Doilooklikeatourist · 17/03/2021 07:51

I had the AstraZeneca jab on Friday too
My arm is still tender at the jab site , but not swollen
I was exhausted on Saturday , and had to go to bed at 9-30 as I’d fallen asleep on the sofa
I must admit I didn’t read about the side effects , ( in case I then suffered from them all in my mind ! ) but it might be worth a phone call to the surgery , just for reassurance

Isolatedizzy · 17/03/2021 10:29

I had mine on Saturday and mine is the same! Swollen, a red patch painful. It's reassuring I'm not the only one!

StrangeAddiction · 17/03/2021 13:54

After seeing someone else with the exact same look who'd been diagnosed with cellulitis I think that's what I had. Here's a few pics of my arm. In one picture you can see that the redness has spread over the pen mark.

Isolatedizzy · 17/03/2021 14:12

Did it go on it's own StrangeAddiction? That's what mine is looking like? I've taken a photo of it for a record!

Timbucktime · 17/03/2021 14:29

Make sure you report it on the Yellow card scheme website.

Seeline · 17/03/2021 14:33

Mine was like that.

I don't think it was cellulitis, as I didn't have a temp. As I said it went down after a week, and the lump was gone by 2

Flippyferloppy · 17/03/2021 14:36

This happens to me with all vaccines. I've had it last up to 3 weeks. I am a generally allergic person though

StrangeAddiction · 17/03/2021 14:36

Yes @Isolatedizzy it was extremely painful, hot and red for about 6 days. I've still got a lump but it's only about 2" round now instead of being the same size as the redness but the photo above where you can see the pen mark and the redness past it started to go the next day on its own as this photo shows...

minniemoocher · 17/03/2021 14:48

Me, lump do large it shows through clothes. Also last Friday

DappledOliveGroves · 17/03/2021 15:34

Thanks, all. It's marginally less swollen today. I shall keep an eye on it.

I've never had it with a flu vaccine!
Will just keep my fingers crossed that it gets better as the week goes on! Smile

This is my jab site 6 days after the jab. It was hot and swollen, but had completely gone by day 10. I had the AZ.

Another update - my arm has swollen again and is more painful. Headache back and feeling under the weather. Is this normal 9 days after the vaccine? Might give GP a call tomorrow.

EleanorLenor · 21/03/2021 22:03

No it’s not normal - contacting your GP is the right thing to do

Isolatedizzy · 22/03/2021 08:11

Oh no Dapple that's rubbish. All the redness and swelling has gone from mine now. It's still tender if I poke it.

minchinfin · 22/03/2021 08:22

Mine was like this for a good 10 days after the vaccine. I couldn't lie on the side for 2 weeks. After the 10 days of hot and red and swollen I had a red rash over the injection site for a week or so. All pretty much gone by the third week. Arm completely back to normal now.

I always gets red sore arm can't sleep on it after flu vaccine. This was the same but a bit more prolonged and hotter and the rash was new.

Isolatedizzy · 01/04/2021 14:18

How's the arm now Dapple? Mine completely back to normal, was tender for a while though!

DaniO2 · 12/04/2021 17:20

I've just been doing a search as my arm is still sore, red and hot to touch after five days. Everything I've read says side effects last a couple of days, so I was getting concerned. I'm glad to see I'm not alone and that most people found it went back to normal eventually.

@DappledOliveGroves I hope your arm is back to normal now. Was your GP any help?

DappledOliveGroves · 12/04/2021 17:27

@DaniO2 - So I'm now 4 weeks and three days on since I had the jab. My arm is pretty normal albeit there is still a very tiny (maybe pea-sized) lump deep under the skin. But it doesn't hurt (yay!) and appears to be disappearing which is good. The GP didn't say much - just said as long as it wasn't getting worse then that's ok and that others have had a similar reaction.

I guess it probably eased off after about 12 to 14 days. But those first two weeks were really sore!
