Hi All,

I'm new to this, sorry if all these questions have been answered......

I've been diagnosed with PCOS, my day 1-5 blood test came back 'normal' as did my hormone test, I've just got my Day 21 test results and they say 'abnormal' and I need to see the GP....I'm stressing about this...anyone had the same/any advice?

Been TTC for nearly 2 years and my BMI is 21 if that's any use?

Thank you in advance!

x

Hi

If i remember, the 21 day blood test will show if you've ovulated or not - by saying its abnormal, it probably means you didn't, which is a common symptom of pcos.

I have PCOS too. The Day 21 bloodtest is to confirm ovulation. They measure the progesterone in your bloodstream which should be, IIRC, over about 15. If it is lower than this then you haven't ovulated.

I've just had the results of my latest Day 21 test which was 67.9, so ovulation confirmed.

A low result doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem. You may just ovulate late in your cycle - my previous cycle didn't ovulate till Day 25 so the Day 21 test showed nothing.

I'm currently on Clomid to help me ovulate more regularly, and it may be that your Dr decides to do the same.

I too have pcos we've bin trying to conceive for over 4 years 3 years in treatment and I haven't ever ovulated abnormal like has been said probably means you didn't... It depends where your from and what units they use in the uk they use nmol/l not ng/l on a medicated cycle it needs to be between 30-35 I've had clomid and injectable gonadatropins this will be the final cycle before ivf are you in treatment? How come if so they have sent you to gp to talk about it and not a cons?

I'm sure it'll be fine there are loads of different ways and when they know the problem they can sort it out. I have now ovulated 3 times with a 56.2 and the last one was 48.6 so just waiting to find out now if it has worked hehe...

Good luck let us know hat happens I know how hard it is to be told 'abnorma'Smile

Thank you so much for the quick replies! Not on any treatment yet, hopefully something more productive will come out of this docs visit. Do any of you reccomend temping with PCOS? I tried the clearblue smiley OPK's but I think they gave false positives. Thank you again! X

I didn't temp but got the clear blue fertility monitor - obviously this only helped once is started on clomid as i didnt ovulate before. I fell pregnant on the first round of clomid and i'm sure this was down to the cbfm!

Buttercup

If you have been ttc for almost two years now, you are well beyond the initial stage of using temp charts and such like anyway.

You should be referred to a gynae and your man should be tested as well to see if there are any male factor problems.

What hormone levels were tested at beginning i.e the day 2 test?. Both LH and FSH should have been compared and tested against one another; if that was not done the test result is meaningless. A poor day 2 test result would have had a knock on effect on the day 21 result as well; LH and FSH kickstart the ovulation process and if these are awry then the day 21 result will show non ovulation.

With the day 21 a level of 30 or over needs to be seen to confirm ovulation.

Would ask, nay insist, that the GP refers you on now rather than keep messing around.

My first question would be, have you had the day 21 test on the right day?

The day 21 test is misnamed, it should really be called the "7 days after expected ovulation" test or "7 days before period" test, as that's when it's supposed to be done. That would only be day 21 if your cylces are 28 days.

So if your cycles are longer than 28 days (as is common with PCOS), you should really have the "day 21" tests on a later day rather than on day 21 itself. How long are your cycles Buttercup?

On the OPKs - apparently it is common for people with PCOS to get false positives with OPKs (although they generally work for me).

My cycles are all over the place! I used to have one about 4/5 times a year but the last year its been every other month. So I'm guessing the test was at the wrong time? Thank you for all the info. I'll def. Be pushing for more info at my app as I hardly have any answers from Attila's q's. I just keep getting told 'normal' or now 'abnormal'. Massive thank you again!

Yes. Insist on referral. They tend to be a bit blase at this stage. But now you need to get moving. A specialist will probably do a few additional tests and then discuss treatment options with you.

Definitely sounds like the test was at the wrong time.

If your cycles are 60 days then really your "day 21" test should be on day 53... !

If your cycles are very irregular it's very hard to get the timing right unfortunately, unless you can use OPKs or temping to tell when you ovulate and then line up a day 21 test for 7 days after that.

Hi,

I have 28 days cycle. Trying to conceive. GP recommended to have a blood test on day 21.
Do I need to do day 21 blood test on the exact day or can i do the day before(day 20). I'm working on that day difficult to get time off.
