Anyone had a pelvic scan?

Bonjour all,

I have a pelvic scan in a couple of weeks and am not really sure what to expect?

Also, have to let hospital know if I have a latex allergy - er, why?!

Anyone want to enlighten me and stop me embarassing myself? Blush

Gawd I wish I was one of those people who got pg utterly by acident!

Of course you need to let the hospital know of all known allergies, particularly if the gloves they use are made of latex.

twirlymum · 07/11/2010 17:38

I have had lots of these, they really are nothing to worry about Smile
They need to know if you are allergic to latex as they put a condom on the end of the probe used to examine you.

Florin · 07/11/2010 17:43

I had one recently. It really isn't anything to worry about the probe doesn't go in very far at all and it doesn't hurt. As twirlymum said they put a condom over the end of the probe so it sterile so that is why they would have asked you about the latex I would have thought.

TanteAC · 07/11/2010 17:44

Ah, marvellous! Grin
That makes sense, although a bit gruesome!!

TY - was just a bit confused as have never been asked this before so presumed it wasn't to do with the gloves.

Will just go back to not giving it another thought, then - ta!

Just want to add that it is no where near as embarrassing or uncomfortable as a smear test. I was worried about it but it was really easy compared to other pelvic exams I have had.

You dont have to use table with the stirrups you just lie on a normal table with your knees bent which is much more comfortable than having your bottom hanging off the edge of the table. Once the probe is in, you can even lower your legs. The probe looks like a dildo (its not bent, willy shape though, its straight) they put a condom on it and then smear it with clear gel which can be cold. They will move it slowly left and then right to get a good look at each ovary, this can be a tiny bit uncomfortable but no more than someone pressing hard on your tummy.
Best of all the sonographer is looking at the screen the whole time and your face, rather than your private parts, so there is much less dignity desctruction than with other tests.

Not bad at all honest :)

everydayishalloween · 09/11/2010 09:59

It really is fine and doesn't hurt at all. I wouldn't even describe it as uncomfortable! You also have a big paper towel thing to cover your nether regions so it is much more dignified than a smear!

I would just say that in my experience perhaps it wasn't a good idea to ask the sonographer loads of questions on what the scan showed because apparently (where I went at least) they aren't supposed to tell you. I grilled the poor woman and she gave me loads of cryptic responses which only served to convince me that my ovaries had dried up, dropped off or were doing the can can across the screen. Felt like a long wait until I got the proper results from my GP and I drove myself mad googling in the meantime!

Interesting thread, I need one of these, have had a referral but been ringing the booking line now for over a week and only ever get a 'we are busy' recorded message, so still haven't even booked it! I wasn't sure what to expect, so it's good to hear from others who have had one.

TanteAC · 09/11/2010 16:27

Thank you all for more responses!

Nice to know it is less mebarassing than a smear, which I don't find bad at all. Just HATE the stirrups thing!

Will let you know!

I had this scan recently and the sonographer asked me to sit on the pillow that she'd put on the bed, then asked me to insert the probe myself (that was a bit weird but hey ho!) then as I inserted it she told me to lie back and it went in a treat! Nothing to worry about, no pain, and far less embarrassing than a smear. Good luck!

TanteAC · 09/11/2010 17:07

Inserting it yourself! Shock
Bit weird!! lol ah well. Kind of glad DH is not coming along, we would both have heaving shoulders and explode laughing with immature jokes outside the hospital...but then we are both 13, really Grin

I had my internal scan today :) I have had about four before as I have a retroverted uterus so an external scan isn't clear enough.

Absolutely nothing to be worried about, no pain or discomfort and it is defintely one of the more dignified procedures :)

HTH and hope it goes well and you get the result you are hoping for :)

Thank you!
