6 wk old baby hasn't pooed for 2 days

Well, hasn't pooed properly - only two very little squirts. He is clearly constipated, lots of face contortions and wind.

I am breastfeeding, but gave him a bottle (3 oz) of formula 3 days ago when I had my old boss here for lunch - didn't want to bf in front of the boss, but wish I had now! sad

Any advice? Will it just pass, or should I give him some apple juice as one of my friends suggested?

Please help if you can.

It's pretty normal. Breastfed babies can go up to 10 days without pooing! DS goes every 4/5 days atm.
If you think he is in pain with it tho maybe go speak to the HV or doctor before you give him apple juice, not sure what age you can give them juice.

no apple juice

try bicycling his legs and rubbing his tummy gently in a clockwise motion

warm bath may help

BF babies often don't pooh for days at a time. It's totally normal. Mine used to go a week between poos

BF DDs were all once a week girls smile

My DS was a once-a-week guy too. Be prepared for a HUGE one when it does come though.....

Quite normal - when it comes it will be worth the wait though grin

Really? Thank you all SO much for replying.

Up until now almost every nappy has been pooey, so practically no poo for 2 days has seemed very odd.

I do feel reassured by your replies. I won't give him any juice, and will await the monster poo!

Thanks again everyone.

I used to peel the nappy off DD1, and it would look there was a second orange nappy still on [boak]. Had to dunk her in a bucket, then in the bath.

My DD had pooey nappies every day for about 6 weeks too then suddenly dropped down to twice or once a week. Totally normal. This happens because when they are breast fed, they take exactly the amount they need, plus human milk is tailored so exactly to their nutritional needs, so their is very little waste product.

My HV did recommend giving small amount of diluted fresh orange juice (1 part juice to 10 parts water) to help with constipation if you do think that's what it is. I never tried it though as it turned out mine wasn't constipated.

Obviously I meant there not their blush

Yes I concur, its normal, my DS2 once went for a full two weeks without pooing. BUT the key is, are they in any pain, is thier stomach hard, when the poo comes is it soft?

I totally know the worry, my DS2 now only goes every two to three days and even now I start getting worried.

Oh the joys

Thanks for these further repies. Since this morning there has been a big poo - and it was not hard, so i do think now that this is not constipation but just normal.

Mumsnet has, once again, saved the day. Thanks everyone x
