they learn to smile in the womb (as well as suck their thumb) but lose this knowledge when they're born so it may just be a natural reflex and not just wind.

It can be wind, but my DS" actually smiled properly at 2 weeks old.

Mine grimaced and pulled a face when they had wind.
I think that they smile because they are happy with something.
If they can cry when they're unhappy, why be surprised if they smile when happy.

DD is 6 days old and does the sleep smile/chuckle thing, so cute. Don't think it's wind, just pracising for later. Wind tends to provoke a much more screwed up grimace imo...

Have forgotten all these lvoely newborn things

so why does everyone always say 'oh its just wind'??? he only smiles in his sleep.. havent seen him smile for real. ds1 smiled all the time at this age.

another thing that annoys me that people say to me : ds2 has a habit of sleeping with his eyes open or opens them in his sleep and everyone goes 'aahh hes looking at me' err no hes asleep. to me its very obvious aswell because his eyes look odd!

I think they smile in their sleep because it's familiar to them. They don't smile so much at first when they are awake because everything is new and maybe somewhat confusing and unfamiliar.
