DS has started occaisionally holding his head in his hands, or putting one hand to the side of his head. He always looks upset when he does this and sometimes cries.

I'd say he's done it about 4 or 5 times in the last week that I've noticed. It's just started. Once, he was definitely doing a poo (no problems with constipation etc though) but other than that, it seems quite random.

Last night he woke crying around 10.30pm and when DH went in, he was holding the side of his head. Eventually we had to settle him with some medised.

I'm trying to be rational about it and tell myself it's just his way of comforting himself - but it's an unusual gesture for such a young babe - I can't recall seeing it before with DD or with any other babies.

Can anyone shed any light, or put me at my ease by saying "mine too"?

Do you think it's worth getting his ears looked at, just to be on the safe side? Is it always one side?

Yes, I think that's probably wise. His little cousin, same age has just got over a big ear infection and his nana is currently on antibiotics for infected synuses (sp?)so it's possibly he's picked up something.

I suppose I just expect to see ear tugging rather than just holding the head (it's not over his ears - think more McCaully Culkin in HOME ALONE, but just a teeny bit further back off the face - definitely more up by his temples and forehead.

Going to call the docs - this is just going to stress me until I do.

get him checked over but my sister did this when little and it wasn't anything sinister...

Molars? My 13month old does this sometimes, poor little mites. I had his ears checked when he was doing it loads though admittedly that was a few weeks ago. Maybe I should go again... but I keep wondering if it is teething pain.

The teeth could be another explantion, definitely. They have been coming through thick and fast - every time he opens his mouth I seem to see a new flash of white.

I think I'll see how he goes over the next couple of days, but it's reassuring to know he's not the only baby out there to grab at his head like an old woman worried about the state of the world!

Thanks to everyone for posting. You know what it's like - you get an idea in your head it could be something really terrible and it's hard make the idea go away!
