Week old baby - sore red patch in fold at top of thigh, what to do?

Feel awful as only just spotted a red raw patch in the fold at the top of dd's thigh. Don't have any particular lotions or potions to put on it, but have put some lansinoh on for now to make her more comfortable - is this ok? How should we treat it otherwise?

it may be thrush, you will need some cream on prescription.

This is really common. Try leaving her nappy off as much as possible. I would also suggest Metanium which works like magic on sore bottoms and skin folds. If it doesn't clear up in a few days consider thrush as scorpio says.

Ensure that you pat it dry properly after each bath/nappy change. Juts use plain wate rif you can as wipes will sting.

Lansinoh sounds fine - but agree with article. Metanium is the bees knees IMO.

It may be thrush. You can get clotrimazole from teh pharmacist - but I am not sure if it is suitable from birth - so you may need to go to GP for this. I would wait 48hrs though to see an improvement with metanium/drying etc.

Also - speak to your HV/MW...they will be happy to advise,

Thanks very much Isn't mumsnet ace.

Have nappy off and DH is going out for Metanium. Hope it's not thrush.

Going to clinic tomorrow so will mention it to the health visitor.

Just a word or warning. Metanium looks innocuous but it can stain fabrics so just be careful when you use it

When our daughter was only a week old she got a similar raw patch too. Their skin is so sensitive isn't it when they are so young?! Our health visitor told us to put vaseline on it and it soon went. It just stops anything irritating the skin any further. Hope that helps you.

Well I have only ever used Elizabeth Ardens 8 hour cream on Ds2's skin, fabulous stuff, any red patch is gone in 2 days. Leave nappies off too.

Clean well, dry well, change nappy often, put some cream on it at each change until it goes (and ask GP about thrush if it doesn't go). One thing about babies, you will be astonished at how quickly they heal. In future you'll obviously watch out for those thigh creases, but just a heads-up to keep an eye on neck creases too, if you have a... well-covered baby, as those can get sore too if not kept clean and dry.
