Anyone had a DC with molluscum? Advice please!

My DS developed some warty looking bumps on the back of his leg late last year and the doctor confirmed it was molluscum contagiosum - which sounds a bit like a Harry Potter spell I think! Anyway, their advice was to leave it alone. DS now has really painful looking eczema around the lumps and I wondered if anyone had managed to try and speed them along - have seen recommendations for silver spray and squeezing (yuk!). Anyone else dealt with this successfully?

I think it really is best to leave them. Ds2 had molluscum around his armpit and they went on their own. Ds3 has one on his back and I was surprised when the GP said it was another molluscum as the 'wart' was far bigger than ds2 ever had. The GP said we could cover it up to try to stop it spreading to other areas of his skin, but then ds2 reacted to the glue in the sticking plaster so I've left it uncovered ever since. It shows no signs of going but he doesn't seem bothered by it.

Do you think the eczema is connected with the molluscum or not? I remember my niece used to have horrible fluid-filled warty things on the back of her legs. I would have to check with my sister but I think eventually the doctor worked out it was something to do with a cold virus which is not what you expect!

You need comfrey cream.

I cannot stress this strongly enough.

Get some now before he gets any more.

It is the only thing that really works.

Oh dear well just check about the exzema and the comfrey cream first. I don't think it's for broken skin.

But as for molluscum it is FABULOUS.

Thanks everyone. I was really happy to leave them to go but they seem to be getting worse and spreading and the eczema is really bothering him. I'll see if I can get the eczema under control then try comfrey cream Gooseberrybushes - thanks for the recommendation.

Highfibrediet - from reading around it says that in around 10% of cases it causes bad eczema around the site and my DS is already prone to dry skin and exzema so I just assumed it was connected. I guess I could do another trip to the docs! She was very adamant that I should not come back as they take so long to go but I think if they are getting worse then she wouldn't mind.

Well it's just one example so probably a red herring. I didn't realise such a high proportion of molluscum cases were associated with eczema. Seems like we got off lightly.

My daughter has the sore red patches around the two on her arms... interesting. The one on her leg has all but gone now and is a red mark.. I might look into comfrey cream though 'cos DS2 and 3 also have it. (with no red patches as yet)

My 3dc have all had mollescum. DC3 only has 2 'warts' and he has a very angry patch of exzema around both of them. Dr confirmed a v close link with exzema and mollescum but did prescribe some steroid cream for the exzema.

My daughter used to get bad eczema around the spots before they got angry and went. Perhaps they will soon start to go. Ours lasted 2 years.

My DD had this a while back and she also suffers from eczema, I'm sure there's a link between the two. She had it for months and the doc said just leave it, the body will eventually recognise it as alien and fight it but DD got embarrassed going swimming etc. I read on here about tea tree oil and dabbed it neat on the spots every evening with a cotton wool ball and within 3 or 4 days she was completely clear, it was incredible.

This is really interesting because I thought his warts were looking better! So perhaps they are on their way out and the eczema was a sign that the body was fighting the virus? I really hope so. Whilst they don't really bother him, they do look unsightly and I wonder what other parents must think when they see him.

If they are not on their way out then thanks for the recommendation Sandyballs, I will try it. And I will be really interested to see how you get on with the comfrey cream Sunshineandshowers!

Ds1 had them in various places on his body for about a year and - as the GP said they would - they just literally went overnight.

Sadly ds2 now has them - as the name suggests they are very contagious! -so will try some comfry cream!

(btw ds1 has excema but ds2 hasnt)

DD1 has had molluscum for almost 4 years Shock. A dermatologist said we could leave them but that if they were itchy (and DD1 was scratching them) to use sterilised tweezers to remove them. We have taken this advice and removed a fair few over the years, especially those on the backs of her legs. She has developed very dry, eczema-like skin on the bits of her legs that the molluscum touch so we resorted to using Wartner on the molluscum, covered that with a plaster and put Savlon on the eczema bit. After a few weeks the molluscum have come to a head and, squeezing either side of it with clean fingertips, the central horrible blobby bit has popped out. It is grim and bleeds a lot but heals very quickly.

DANDELION SAP!!!! Seriously!! squeeze some sap out of a dandelion stem onto the spot and cover with a plaster. repeat daily, we have done it for 2 days now and the spots are going!!! DC have had them for a year and i only just read about this!! Try it!

Arghhhh! The little bleeders are still going strong! His eczema is a lot better though so I am going to try comfrey cream and then tea tree oil if that doesn't work. And have added dandelion sap to the list of things to try now 25goingon95! I think it might just be a case of containing them until they go.

Becaroooo - before they went were there any signs that they were getting better? Did they look dried up?

I am completely obsessed with them to the point of dreaming about them! It is ridiculous.

My DD (4 1/2) has just been diasgnosed with molluscum, and I am reluctant to "wait and see" - partly because the bumps they are so unsightly but also because they have begun to itch!

Has anyone heard/or used Thuja cream or Collidial Silver to treat these before? These are apparently topical creams that should work on the younger child. I am going to try comfrey cream too first as it is tried and tested.

Hi the best thing i tried to cure molluscum was from a company called forces of nature. www.forces-of-nature.org. I bought an oil called molluscum no more from them. It was fabulous. Used it on my wee girl and within 1 1/2 weeks she was clear and had no scarring.

I wish I had read this earlier! My dd has had them for over 18months. Dr's are absolutely rubbish IMHO when dd has been crying as they are sore and itchy! One dr did give some compression plasters which helped a bit but dd hated how they felt on her legs. They are very contagious as the whole class at school had them, school didn't seem to see the issue! However they are going and she has got a couple of scars but nothing that won't fade or be unseen as they are on the backs of her knees. I shall be getting remedies as reccomended on here in case they havent all fled yet. Thanks!

My 18 month old DD had molluscum in one armpit and then it spread down towards her groin. She also suffers from eczema but didn't appear to have any at the time. Doc said just to leave it but then a friend recommended homeopathic Thuja tablets (you can easily buy them on line). The molluscum soon started clearing though of course it might have been a coincidence! Worth a try though.

Eczema means the skin is broken so allows the infection in / to develop as I recall. Those with eczema are more prone to it but all children have the capacity to develop it. We just had to wait it out although "traumatising" them (my HV's way if saying give 'em a squeeze) made them go faster.
