Please help me prepare for DS's GP appt in 30 mins time

DS (14 weeks) started to get ill last monday. He had temps, cough, cold and vomitting some feeds for two days then was admitted to hospital on wednesday with bronchiolitis. We came home on saturday after he was treated with oxygen, IV fluids (to rest his tummy) and then NG feeds until he could feed again. He tested positive for adenovirus but had no bacterial growth and his urine was fine.

He's been getting better very gradually but yesterday evening started spiking a temp. He hasn't had a temp since tuesday of last week. Yesterday he swung between listless and lethargic to irritable. I'm off to the GP with him in 30 mins time but I don't know what to say without sounding neurotic. His breathing isn't too bad so I don't think he needs to go to hospital again but I have no idea what is up and I don't want to take any risks.

TIA

Just explain clearly to GP what you have said here. You are right to be concerned as he is very young and your instinct is obviously that he is not right. I am sure your doctor will be helpful, but don't be fobbed off: if you are not happy, say so! Hope he gets well soon, is so horrible when they ill.

Just tell your GP what's happened. He's so tiny no Dr is going to think you're neurotic, not with that history. You poor things, you must be exhausted, emotionally and physically. I hope he gets better soon. Report back later and let me know how it goes. Smile

Just explain it as you have here - you're not being neurotic at all. FWIW, I have taken my DCs to the doctor's with similar symptoms when they were babies and nobody ever made me feel like I was wasting their time - and my babies hadn't been in hospital! My GP always says she'd rather check over a baby and make sure everything's OK than risk leaving them in case there is a problem.

Hope it all goes well.

I'm so tired that I can't make a good judgement call anymore. It's so hard to keep things in perspective at the moment. I'm praying that we don't end up back in hospital, but, if that's where he needs to be...

Personally I tend to write things down. Just make a bullet popint list of what you want to say. If I don't do this I always come out and think "oh I never said..."

Let us know how you go on.

iwantavuvezela · 29/03/2011 10:14

Swaliswan its the doctors call, not yours, (so dont worry about judgement and what call to make, they are the professionals) just tell them what you have said here and they will do the rest. i have found the nhs to be wonderful whenever i have taken my dd and they have always said just bring a child in if you are worried .....
good luck and hope it goes well and you are home soon

I had similar with Ds a week or so after he had come home from his first bronchi admission. We went to the gp and just explained everything to him and he was great. Reassured me everything was fine but to take him back/ to a and e if he got worse.

Hope he is ok, I know how worrying it can be

blackeyedsusan · 29/03/2011 11:46

How did it go ?

Swaliswan · 29/03/2011 13:22

GP checked him over for anything 'obvious or worrying'. He didn't find anything so said to keep going with calpol and take a urine specimen in on thursday if he is still ill. GP thinks that it's a virus on top of the virus that caused his bronchiolitis. I guess that only time will tell.

Glad that you don't have to go back to hospital.

lostlady · 29/03/2011 14:54

Good, hope he perks up. Don't hesitate to take him back or call NHS if you are worried tho.
