Heat bumps on DS' ears??

He has had what I think are heat bumps on his ears when the sun comes out. He had it last summer and it looks like nettle rash but its definately related to the sunshine. During the winter it doesnt appear at all.

Ds is 10 yrs and very fair skinned, but with dark hair. His Dad is a redhead with blond eye lashes and blond eye brows so very very fair skinned.

His right ear looks really awful today after school, with all the pinna area totally covered in white bumps.
What is it ??

My DS2 (13) has had exactly the same for 4 years,in the same place as your DSs. I too have worked out it's definitely sunshine related. My GP was no help.

I've no idea exactly what it is,other then a heat rash type thing..i have tried lots of different types of sun protections, but the only one that seems to help and keep it at bay, is a totally 'natural' one from a healthfood shop made from Hempseed oil.

Fine protecting them in the summer, but on days like today, when the sun unexpectedly comes out,you send them to school, with naked ears!

Just hoping they grow out of it,and bumping in case anyone else has any more knowledge!

Thank you Jellykat....I have got an appointment with my GP on Monday after school....just want to check for sure that its not an on going strange skin disorder that could go malignant. Hmm

ds2 gets these as well! He's also very fair skinned with tons of freckles and dark hair - we've got red hair in the family and both him and I burn very easily.

Will watch to see but heat rash sounds about right.

Saw the Doc and its not heat rash.. its a skin condition and called Chondrodermatitis Nodularis.....caused by pressure on the ears lobes (pinna) like earphones or sleeping one side for ages. Also caused by cold. (?)

I really cant say what has caused my sons problem, but we have been prescribed some mild steroid cream to apply 2x daily... and we then return in 2 weeks. Lets hope the cream helps . Its not serious though so the Doctor says.
