Does any of you have baby boy who hadstrong case of UTI? And if yes then what tests the doctors carried after? My son spend 5 days in hospital but the tests they want to do now seem very invasive for 4 month old baby. Thank you!

They are maybe checking if there is an underlying reason why he has a UTI.

As a baby I had several undiagnosed UTIs- was given antibiotics for a whole range of other suspected infections.

I was taken to hospital dehydrated at 10 months where it was discovered I had a kidney issue which was leading to persistent infections that had actually done more damage.

I would guess they are investigating the cause rather than diagnosing the UTI and just treating it. My own dd was diagnosed with the same when she was 2.

Hi my baby boy had a considerable infection in his urinary tract at 5 weeks old. It made him very poorly and like you spent 5 days in hospital with him. It is not common for very young babies (particularly boys) to have UTI's and they like to check that the urinary tract is working properly, hence the tests. The most common is some of the urine travelling back up into the kidneys from the bladder on urination and they will probably check this first, then probably a kidney scan at a later date to check there is no scarring to his kidneys. Tbh the younger they are the easier it is for these tests (although not for us mums). It all sounds scary but it is quite common. Is your ds on trimethoprim?

Charlieboo and spinaroo thank you. I think you are right. They did a scan and kidneys look ok. (he was in hospital 5 days). The tests they want to do is the one for reflux and then isotep test. Do you know if they hurt? Thanks again as I am so worried, he already had so many tests in the hospital and it is heartbreaking to see him in pain.

The reflux one is ok, just uncomfortable i'd say. My ds had it at about 3 months old, they put a tube into his willy (sorry not very technical lingo) and fill his bladder with fluid and then he does a wee and they scan his bladder while he's doing the wee and they can see where the urine is travelling from and to. All in all in there about 10 mins I'd say. He then had an ultra sound and a kidney scan at year old. My ds had no reflux and never had another urine infection it was just one of those things. He was on trimethoprim for a year though and saw the paediatrician till he was 3, only couple of times though. He is 5.5 years now and the picture of health and blooming gorgeous but I wanted to reply as it's so worrying at the time all these tests but he will be fine. My gp told me years ago when we were babies they would have left it but now they cover all bases. Hope that helps.
