A bit of background: DD is 6.5yo and started school in Germany this year where the children do not start until 6yo. She was only in school 6 weeks when we moved to the French speaking are of Switzerland. She will have to learn French before learning to read in school.

She has already learnt most of the alphabet and can sound out lots of simple words.

We were given a first reader book from a friend, but she finds it very boring.

"This is Peter, this is Jane. This is the dog. This is the dog, Dan. Peter likes Jane. Jane likes Peter. Peter likes Dan. Dan likes Jane. Dan likes Jane and Peter..."

Are you asleep yet? No wonder she does not like reading that book.

Are there any books that have proper stories but still use simple words? She is not learning key words, she sounds the words out.

Marks and spencers have some first readers that are fairy stories. Although they might be a bit advanced for your DD yet.

Also Usborne books do some fairy stories where there is a simple sentence at the top for the new reader, then a bit of text at the bottom for the parent to read on each page. So they are getting a reasonable story without it being too hard going for them. eg this one

We have some of the first readers from Markies, they are great but still a bit advanced. Will have a look at the Usborne books, thanks for the tip.

There is also the Usborne Reading Programme which is also stories at different levels as you can see if you click here#

I would also be interested in any other suggestions as my dd(6) is at a French school so I am teaching her to read in English using the phonics system.

My son is completely captivated by The Magic Treehouse - an American series I think which he is working through one by one.
