What are you reading to your 6 yr old DCs?

We've been working our way through the Swallows & Amazons series, 2 chapters per night, but are about to run out (!) Was thinking of maybe EE Nesbit next, perhaps 5 Children & It, but wondering what other DCs liked.

Missed a trick on LW&W by giving it to DD to read when she was bored - she's only read that & Prince Caspian so far tho. Maybe the Horse & his Boy might be a good one to read aloud (was always my favourite anyway)

My son loves Beast Quest, Horrid Hendry, Mr Mr Majeika, Famous Five, The Faraway Tree. Usborne do some lovely books for young readers who are starting to read independently.

I read him "The Magican's Nephew", "Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe", but the plot was a bit complicated. We gave up on reading "The Horse and His Boy" because it was too hard for my son. Unless you have a gifted and talented six year old, you might find that the level of comprehension is a bit high.

Had forgotten Pippi Longstocking - remember a pirate comes into it somewhere, which would def go down well.

I have done 5 children and it and the Phoenix and the carpet with DS1. He enjoyed both of them. He has also loved Laura Ingalls Wilder "Little House on the Prairie" books. He's now on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I do wonder what children will have to read by themselves though sometimes - it's not a criticism, just a dilemma for me. For example, I remember reading the Secret Garden for myself and loving the experience - and A Little Princess.
I am reading Paddington. Hilarious and very sophisticated vocabulary, surprisingly so.

Mabanana I have the opposite problem - DD reads a lot to herself (including quite a few mentioned here), and hence the question as to what to read to her!
That's why I try to look for books that are maybe a bit longer or more complex (without totally baffling her plot-wise) that she wouldn't read on her own. I don't think she would be up for Harry Potter though (too scary!).
We've read all the Borrowers books out loud and they were definitely a big hit though a bit stressful in the later books, very hard to find a good place to stop for the night . . .
I will have to look out the Emil books, remember that they are good.

mabanana, I think children read to themselves when they are ready. My son has just started reading to himself but still enjoys being read to. I will read to him until he makes it clear that he no longer wants to be read to.

I can read books to him that he would find too challenging to read on his own. It improves his concentration and I am sure that one day he will be able to read the great classics for himself.

Just ordered DD Charlottes Web, was wondering about the Heidi books?

Report
Takver · 12/10/2008 19:38

Of course, yes, Heidi would be great. DD loved the film and had a short version - will look for the proper one.
DH vetoed Charlotte's Web as too sad and makes him cry although DD has read it herself.
Tooticky, don't you think 6 is a bit young for the Moomins?? I like them but I think DD might be baffled . . .

DD (6) enjoyed the Spiderwick books.... Mary Poppins, The Ghost of Thomas Kemp, Enchanted Tree books, I don't really like R Dahl (sorry ), LWATW also. Wishing Chair books are fun. Am always trying to find more.. will try the Borrowers and about to start HP with her!
