Recommendations for a book to read aloud to my 12 year old DD

My 12 year old DD has always been a reluctant reader and has recently been diagnosed with an eye convergence. She reminded me yesterday that she use to love it when we shared a book together (which I did for years!) . I am so pleased that she wants to do this again :)

The problem is finding a book - she just says she doesn't know when asked and has rejected my two suggestions of The Hobbit and The Hunger Games. She says she likes books about real life and not fantasy.

Have any of you suggestions please?

Goodnight Mr Tom by MIchelle Magorian
Wonder by RJ Palacio
Gods and Warriors by Michelle Paver
Everybody Jam by Ali Lewis
Trash by Andy Mulligan

I have reviewed them on my website if you want to find out a bit more about them: //www.booksteensandmagazines.com

I would start with something fun / teenagery before moving on to the 'good' stuff. At that age I enjoyed Judy Blume (be careful - some are inappropriate!), Paula Danziger, Jean Ure. Is Jacqueline Wilson too young for her?

DD & I have both enjoyed:

My Family & Other Animals by Gerald Durrell plus various of his other books

A London Child of the 1870s and A London Girl of the 1880s by M V Hughes (her autobiographies - they're fascinating to read & see what life was like for a girl going on 150 years ago, dd particularly enjoyed hearing about her school life)

As the Falcon Her Bells by Philip Glasier (probably only if your dd is interested in wildlife)

I think that Bill Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything would be good to read aloud as well (I've got it as an audiobook read by BB which is great though not what you're looking for)

Call the Midwife is a very good idea, though at 12 I would read ahead and skip the more harrowing chapters . . .

Thank you so much everyone for your input.

Ihave made a shortlist of:
Wonder
Secret Henhouse Theatre
Everybodys jam
Trash
Judy Blume - Deenie
Theres a Bat in Bunk 5

She has read Carries War, Silver Sword and Good night Mr Tom. It is interesting about Call the Midwife - I read the book ages ago beofre the tv serial came out and I would not have thought of it at all
