Hi, my 2 year old dd has grown out of board books and seems to be ready for something with a bit more text in than Maisy books, all we have so far is Laura's Star and a few Blue kangaroo books... I'm looking for inspiration! What do you love to read to your little ones????

Most Julia Donaldson books go down pretty well here. The Gruffalo was DD1's favourite when she was about 2, she also loves The Snail and the Whale.

anything by Julia Donaldson but especially what the ladybird heard and the gruffalo. The tiger who came for tea. Any of the Mog books. The Rainbow Fish. The lion in the meadow

DS likes Julia Donaldson (esp Gruffalo, Squash and a Squeeze and Room on the Broom). He also likes Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs (the original books, not the rubbishy TV tie-in ones) and Pumpkin Soup is another recent favorite. I know they're pretty unpopular on here but he's also very keen on the Mr Men. They were the first books he really laughed at and he's always repeating parts of them. HTH.

DS2 (2) loves books. He loves:

Julia Donaldson (in general)
Pumpkin Soup (which is lovely)
Harry and the Dinosaurs
Dr Seuss
The aliens love underpants books (the rhymes are pretty dire though)
The pirate cruncher (he loves, loves, loves this; it's quite dark though)
Good little wolf (also quite dark)
David Melling books (he seems to like them all)
We're going on a bear hunt
Giles Andreae books

And loads more.

Topsy and Tim books are a major fave with our DS

DD (just 2) is currently obsessed with "Penguin" by Polly Dunbar, "What the Ladybird Heard" by Julia Donalson and tonight she really enjoyed "Peace at Last" by Jill Murphy.

Oh and the Curious George books which she got for Christmas.

I dont have a two year old, but have been around a fair few little ones, and i'd say "The Queen's KNickers" always well received by both boys and girls; anything by SHirley Hughes or Allen Alberg. What about Funny Bones (in a dark, dark house, on a dark, dark hill etc)?

Can you tell I love the classics!

jennifersofia Sat 14-Jan-12 21:45:42

Jez Alborough books are good, such as 'Hug' and 'Where's my Teddy?'

What a lot of replies, THANK YOU do much everyone for taking the time to reply, I'm hoping to get an hour to myself in Smiths/ Waterstones so I can check some of these suggestions out and then see what I can get on Amazon. Thank you ladies! grin

Why don't you head to the library first then you can see what he goes for before you buy. Our library has a great kids area.

At 2 DD1 like a lot of the books mentioned above although she was a later comer to The Gruffalo etc.

Giraffes can't dance is brilliant
Tiger who came to tea
Owl babies
Kipper (any) (the DVD is great too)
Fergus (the sea dog one is the best in our opinion)
Elmer

I forgot about Kipper and Owl bbies. DD also loves a book called Landy about an old abandoned landrover on a farm. We go through phases of using the library loads - usually just before birthday/christmas when we are bored of the books we have at home. My absolute favourite is This is the Bear by Sarah Hayes

SkiBumMum Sun 15-Jan-12 20:21:26

Also, have you tried the orchard farm series by usborne. My godson adores them.
