who likes Horrible Science, Horrible Geography, the Knowledge etc.

She's running out of ones that she hasn't read, and I think also she'd quite like something a bit less 'bitty', IYKWIM.

Any recommendations? She's got the Way things Work book (the one with mammoths in it) which is quite good but suffers from trying to cover too much ground in not enough space, I think.

Should also say that she has a £15 book token to spend so she'd be happy with recommendations for more expensive books too :)

Would highly recommend 'Danger!' by DK. It's a cross between Horrible Histories/Geographies etc and the Guinness Book of Records. It is very visual and is quite substantial but does not have pages and pages of dense text.

Excellent - will suggest she looks out for it. Any other suggestions?

She might like A Really short History of Nearly Everything

Takver · 30/03/2011 19:11

Good idea - actually, I think they have it in the library, even better!

I'd also wondered if there was a more modern equivalent to Our Island Story? Had a bit of a search on Amazon, but couldn't come up with anything.

DS (9 but good reading age) has read recently:

pick me up

Story of Britain this is quite recent and on special!

more history stories

Philosophy for kids:
philosophy files

big questions

These are fun but short (even DD(6) read these): actually factually and there is another like this do elephants ever forget

And these might be worth a try depending on reading age/stamina:
what on earth

Little history of the world DH and DS enjoyed this!

Fantastic suggestions - many thanks. Keep 'em coming - dd just has the book token, but I can store away extra ideas for the future (especially on Book People special offer)!

Have you seen the WOW encyclopaedias? Ds1 bought the Visual Encyclopaedia of Everything with a Christmas book token and is enthralled. He's since had the animals one from the school library too.

The next on the list (he's asked us for a book token rather than an Easter egg in a few weeks) is How to Make a Universe, inspired at least in part by his physics and chemistry teaching dad!

Am PMSL at how to make a universe - given the state of dd's bedroom, she could probably make her own without leaving the house . .

Just to add, this has been a big hit over the holidays:

Tales from English History

Just got three books in the post today (courtesy of Abebooks!), look great and dd is really looking forward to reading them - we've got a good selection on here to work our way through over the next few months. Many thanks all :)
