How long did it take for you to stop looking pregnant after the birth?(38 Posts)
My baby is 4 days old today and I still look pregnant. How long should I expect to wait until my stomach starts to go down?
Obviously I know its going to take a while but I'm new to all this and have no idea whats normal.
I had an emergency section and my legs are still really swollen too. I got a big shock when I looked in the mirror after I got home and saw them as nobody had warned me and I hadn't really gained weight on them during the pregnancy so I was a bit WTF!?
Also did any one else find they had no appetite afterwards? I'm not sure if its as a result of the tiredness or a side effect of the epidural etc.
It varies from woman to woman, I'd say I just looked fat by 4-5 weeks. I went to my 6week check in non-maternity jeans 2 sizes bigger than pre-baby, and now dd is 10weeks, those jeans are too big. (but still a size bigger than before her).
Take care of yourself, you've got blood and sweat to go, at about 6-7 weeks things will have settled down enough for you to assess what actual weight you've gained, don't look at scales prior to 6 week check.
It's been 17 years so far.........
can't really help on the "looking pregnant still" bit as I never really looked pregnant even when I was, and both my boys were early and small, but....
4 days is far too early to be worrying about it. We are all different. My tummy was never an issue but my tits never recovered!
Regarding the legs, try to keep them elevated, and when they're not elevated keep them moving. Drink lots of water (obviously you'll need to anyway if you are breast feeding). Don't cross them. I had my stitches removed on day 5 by the MW at home, so next time you see her show her your legs. If you are still worried, or you are already signed off by the MW see your GP. You'll be amazed how much water you sweat out over night initially though.
Im going to say this even though i have always been obsessed about getting back to normal after having my 5dc...
You've had major surgery firstly. If your legs are swollen, get off ur feet & drink loads of water.
The quickest I've ever got into my pre pregnancy jeans was after my first dc, about a week. The longest 4 weeks after ds5. Im a size 8 normally & dont put alot of weight on whilst pregnant. The condition of youth tummy before will also impact how quickly you go back to normal.
Good luck. Take care of yourself & be kind to yourself!
and yes to n appetite. was strange. I kept eating because I felt I should..
Not youth tummy but your tummy!!
Thats also a point its so easy when your a teenager or in your 20's to get back to normal.
This current baby will probably take me months to get back to normal!!
Oops this has posted twice for some reason.
I'm not too worried yet. I gained 3 stone but it was all bump and baby was almost 11lb!! Am just wondering whats normal to expect. I don't look too bad for someone who just gave birth but I do still look pregnant.
I looked pregnant for about a week to ten days but had (have) a big tummy for much much longer!!
About a week, but my bump was ALL baby. Still losing the weight though
DD1 - I didn't really as was pregnant again when she was 8 weeks old and had 9 months of munchies...
DD2 - about a week.
DS - immediately. He was born at 28 weeks, I'd not even discovered I was pregnant until 6 weeks previously and didn't show at all.
DD3 - ELCS at 38 weeks, again immediately. I barely showed at all with her and was a stone lighter after having her than I was at the start of my pregnancy.
Your uterus does need time to contract though and I'm pretty sure that hat can take up to a week/ten days. Don't fret
11lb?! Blimey! Congratulations btw.
I'm still waiting.
Dd is 12yo.
I can't remember now exactly but I do remember swollen ankles for a while afterwards. What is a vivid memory of that time though was when I met my mum for the first time after giving birth. DD (full term) had to be transferred to a different hospital at 1 day old as there was something wrong with her but the drs didn't know what (turns out she had blocked bowel and needed surgery at 3 days old). Anyway mum and dad came to meet us at the new hospital when DD was about 36 hrs old and very poorly. Very first thing mum said to me was "ooh I'm surprised you've still got a tummy, I lost all mine straight away". She was very lucky I bit my tongue!
Me laughed out loud at 17 years!
It took a few days just for puffiness/swelling to go down. By 2weeks post partum I was in my non-maternity clothes but they were a bit tight! By 3 months my clothes were too big and by 1 year they were getting tight again
I lost a lost of weight post birth by bf-ing and pushing the pram A LOT (not my choice). As ds self settled more and bf'd less the weight crept back on.....
I'm 3 days post partum and after a day of doing bugger all my feet and calves are back to normal.
I felt great two days after my first but this time I'm still a bit wobbly on my feet and don't feel quite solid in the abdomen, lying on my side feels like my internals all shift downwards.
I have no appetite either, was nearly 3pm before I got round to breakfast. I have chocolates and all manner of wonderful things to eat that were off the menu last week but I just can't face them.
The swelling is a bit un-nerving isn't it?! I think it was 2 weeks before mine went down completely - although I'd had a 24 hour labour then emcs and then a further operation under ga to mend damage done during the cs. They said the swelling was because I'd been immobile for so long.
I think I stopped looking pregnant at about 6 weeks pp but I'm still a size bigger than I was pre-pregnancy at 16 weeks pp. It mostly seems to be because my stomach muscles have given up completely so I'm doing pilates and plenty of walking to try to get back to my previous size.
It's very early days yet for you so do try not to worry too much. The appetite does come back (with a vengeance) eventually! Congratulations - enjoy getting to know your baby.
I still looked pregnant for about 6 days. I'm on day 12 now and while I'm not flat, I definitely don't look pregnant anymore. Everyone tells me to give it 6 weeks before I even think about "getting back into shape" though. 4 days is really early, concentrate on resting and enjoying your baby! And congratulations x
Rallytog I had a 24 hr labour before the EMCS too so we probably had similar swelling - I was horrified as nobody warned me!
I'm not worried about getting back into shape at all at this stage. Just wondering whats normal really. I'm too tired and just want to cuddle my baby.
<looks at 16 yr old nearly 6ft DD2>
<looks at flabby belly>
Bless you s/he's 4 days old, you get cuddling & rest up, time enough to think about getting your shape back later.
My first baby left me chubby for a couple of years.
I lost the weight a few months before finding out I was pregnant again, but this time I didn't pile on the pounds because I ate sensibly (no cravings for vienetta ice cream this time!).
I had a CS this time and was amazed to find within about 7-10 days people were saying I didn't look like I'd given birth.
You could still tell naked though, just not through my clothes.
I am finally back into my Pre-pregnancy jeans but am 9 weeks post partum, and do still need to exercise as there is a little bit of jelly belly.
But I'm told it often takes a year to fully get back to normal, and every person is different. Certainly my two experiences with my own 2 children have been completely different.
I had hugely swollen legs after the c section though, not in the pregnancy, and I noticed when I put my feet up overnight they went down a lot, but as soon as I was on my feet they swelled massively again. I'd say that stopped about 6 weeks post birth.
It all takes time and patience, so hang in there! 4 days is way to early to expect to be back to normal.
The women in my pregnancy yoga class usually bring their babies to visit around 2-3 weeks old. I've seen 7 so far and none of them have still looked pregnant to me.. maybe they feel big to themselves, but to me none looked pregnant.
I'm 3 and a half weeks post partum and didn't look pregnant a week ago- the woman at the children's centre thought I was there for booking in!
The bulk of the pooch went after a week/10 days or so. I'm still flabbier than I've ever been in my life but uteuterus has obviously gone down so just flab to go. I am breastfeeding and think that helps.
I have also had very low appetite- a good thing perhapsgiven a lack of t to eat during the day!
