Are you less likely to poo if you give birth in an upright position?

(9 Posts)

Just musing ... With DD I gave birth flat on my back and did poo a bit blush, with DS I was upright and didn't. This is obviously a very scientific survey so far wink but it does sort of make sense that if you're lying on your back then there's going to be more pressure on your back passage I think. So who would like to add some scientific data to my scientific study with stories of poos pooed or avoided?

I've poohed lying on my back, on my side, standing up... the only labour I didn't poo during was the one that began with spending the first two hours on the toilet emptying my entire digestive system. So there was nothing left.

if there is poo in there it will come out, no matter which way up you are.

At the point of labour, I really wouldn't give a shit if I did a shit!!!!!

Intersting theory. I gave birth standing and I didn't poo, at least I don't think I did. Pretty sure I didn't poo, must check with DH.
But I did have severe constipation for the last few weeks of pregnancy too.

There will be an awful lot of pressure on your back passage whatever position you are in. If it is there it will come out. grin

DD1 - sitting up/on my back - didn't poo.
DD2 - same position - did poo (a lot....)

Dammit, back to the drawing board grin

I know it's something that a lot of pg mums worry about so thought it could be a good incentive to keep off their backs. Maybe I will just start a rumour instead wink
