So it looks like I'm being induced...

So after over 2 weeks of pre-labour and a so far unsuccessful sweep on Friday it looks I will be going into hospital tomorrow evening to be induced. I have tried all the natural methods of bringing this baby out from acupuncture and reflexology to sex and curry (have had more sex this week than throughout the whole of my pregnancy!) so just wondered if anybody had some nice induction stories to share with me? Please, please no horror stories, I was all ready for the dream birth (naturally progressing labour using G&A and Hypnobirthing and a water birth) which is obviously not going to happen for me now so just want to hear positive stories of birth following induction. Thanks in advance you lovely ladies :)

JaynieB · 10/10/2010 20:39

I was induced - and ended up with a lovely healthy baby!

Good luck, your baby will be here soon.

CarGirl · 10/10/2010 20:41

Induced all 4 times, only ever had one stitch for a tiny nick (baby was 10lb 6oz), never needed an assisted delivery, never needed the drip. Had 4 healthy babies Grin

debka · 10/10/2010 20:41

I had a lovely induction. Took a little while though- had 2 pessaries on first day and just got backache, no real contractions. They advised me to take a painkiller and sleeping pill and slept well in an empty ward. Next morning I woke up at 6, my waters broke and labour progressed naturally. I had DD at 5.11pm with no drip, and just gas and air. It was fine!

Good luck, I hope yours goes as well as mine did.

Thanks everybody, starlight my MW has advised me to have it sooner rather than later (I will be 41+5) and although I know I could go to 42 weeks I am happy to take my MW advice. Labour has stopped and started so many times with me that I am just completely knackered and would rather just know that 'this is it' IYKWIM. Just a bit nervous as I had such a strong visualisation of what I wanted to happen and although I know there's nothing I could have done more I am just a bit disappointed that it has come to this :( But I can't wait to meet my baby - which is of course the important bit :D

I was told that it is the hospitals policy to get the baby out by the 42 week milestone due to the increased chance of placenta failure. She was very uncomfortable with letting me go in at 42 weeks. The hospital I will be going into is a 'high risk' hospital so they are very rigid in their views of what should happen and when but at least I know I will be in very good, well experienced hands.

At the end of the day I just want what is best for my baby and I understand that doesn't always go hand in hand with what I want I just thought hearing some positive experiences would put me at ease a little more.

Induced three times, all successful labours with three glorious mad boys to show for it. In fact with DS2 whole labour was under an hour!

I understand all the arguments for and against being induced and am hoping against hope that the pessary will be enough to get things going but I feel like I just don't have the energy any more to challenge anything!

I have an appointment with my MW first thing to have another sweep so I will ask her again whether going in tomorrow evening is really necessary and see if I can persuade her to be a bit more lenient on the hospitals policies considering my pregnancy has been low risk to the point of boring and see if she will agree to monitoring or at least if there is somebody else I can talk to about it.

And don't feel pushed in any way, its nice to have someone to get emotional for me at the moment! I just want to sleep and eat chocolate Grin

Like the OP I understand the arguments for an against but am being induced later in the week - any positive stories as opposed to second guessing decisions would be much appreciated!!

Shhhdonttell · 10/10/2010 21:43

lol thanks starlight I do love a good excuse for a dirty book Wink and thanks to everybody else for your reassuring words - if anybody else has any positive stories I will be glued to mumsnet for the next 24 hours so keep them coming!

Anastasiak when are you due to be induced?

ThatDamnDog · 10/10/2010 21:46

I was desperate for a straightforward labour as it was a VBAC but I developed pre-eclampsia and was faced with a section or induction. My cervix was starting to dilate so I avoided the prostin but had the drip in the end. It was sore, but labour is! It was also fabulous. And straightforward. Your stop-start of the last couple of weeks probably means you're getting there by yourself anyway but if you do need induction it will probably be fine!

hairymelons · 10/10/2010 21:49

My Dsis had 2 inductions at 42 weeks, both v positive. She had an epidural for the first, used hypnobirthing for the 2nd. She only needed the pessary 2nd time round, no drip and although it was intense she coped fine using the hypnobirthing techniques and some gas and air at the end.

As you've done the hypnobirthing then start off using that. It is brilliant. If they won't let you labour in the birth pool, ask if you can get in the bath/ shower instead, both are lovely during labour. And if you find it's getting too intense too quickly then the pain relief is there for you, just remember to remain as active and upright as you can and get into whatever position is comfortable for you. Even if you have an epidural and continuous monitoring you can be supported in an upright position etc. You probably know all this, just reminding you that even if you are induced, you aren't necessarily relinquishing all control and you can still have a positive influence and a positive outcome.

hairymelons · 10/10/2010 21:52

Ooh, I've just spotted it's you! You answered my thread about annoying pre-labour.

I'll be watching this space for the birth announcement. Best of luck :)

anastasiak · 10/10/2010 21:52

Shhhdonttell - Friday. Am dreading it but trying very hard to think positive!!! I am pretty sure the baby won't come before then - cervix totally unfavourable for sweeps and no sign of anything happening, although I suppose I may get lucky!
Many thanks to ThatDamnDog and HairyMelons for the encouraging stories!!

urbanewarrior · 10/10/2010 21:54

I was induced twice - first because I got to 40+13 and second because my waters broke at 38 weeks but nothing happened. And both were absolutely fine - the only thing I'm cross about in retrospect is how absolutely petrified of it I was in advance.

First time I just had the pessary and then they broke the waters - long labour but only gas and air (but quite a lot of it Grin) and no more intervention and lovely baby boy Smile. Second time I had the synoctin drip - which again I was really worried about in advance. But was really fine - midwife knew I was scared and took it really slowly. I only had about 4 breaths of g&a before DD was born. But that was second labour.

So all I would say - is that apart from the naturally starting bit I almost had your dream birth after being induced (no waterbirth) but used my hypnobirthing. Worth remembering that the induction is only giving you the hormones that your body would be producing anyway. So not that far away from nature. That's how nice midwife explained it to me anyway the second time. And she did - at my insistence - give me the lowest slowest dose - and actually the drip was better than jus the pessary because the whole labour was much shorter. Best of luck, and try not to worry

Shhhdonttell · 10/10/2010 21:58

Hi Hairymelons how are you getting on?! I am guessing no baby yet...? Well you can see how my pre-labour is going! I had a sweep on Friday - 1cm dialated after 12 days of it! least I know I will have my baby by Wednesday Grin

anastasiak I will be sure to leave an update as soon as I am able to let you know how it goes (I am sure it will all be fine!) and I am told when it comes to birthing babies miracles happen every day, a friend of mine went from 0 - crowning in 7 hours! She said it was completely unexpected and literally came out of nowhere! I have my fingers crossed for you!

OP posts:
warthog · 10/10/2010 22:02

i was induced with a drip. it was fine! i was quite mobile, could use the birthing ball, choose whatever position i wanted. took 7.5 hours from beginning to end. you can ask them to turn the dose down. i think i was on 90 at one stage and dh asked them to tone it down a bit, which they did quite happily.

just think, you're so close to the end now. and as soon as that baby is out, all your pregnancy niggles disappear Smile

cereza · 10/10/2010 22:05

I was induced for my second child, needed 2 pessaries, so it took a while, but once it started, it was very quick, no more intervention, only gas and air and a lovely baby at the end of it!
Good luck.

Shhhdonttell · 10/10/2010 22:08

Wow so many lovely stories! I am feeling much, much happier, and hopefully so will others who are facing the great unknown of induction! Thank you!

Hey - don't mean to be cheeky and hijack your thread shhdonttell These stories are a real help - I'm looking at induction Weds night as I have high BP and protein in my urine so... it's not resolving and we just have to get on with it. What worries me most is the consultant says I have to have an epidural as it lowers bp...in fact he just went through the list la la epidural, ventouse, forceps ... la la baby! Such an escalation of intervention is my worst nightmare, I already have SPD, and cos I'm lucky like that vulvodynia (basically, a sore fanny) and had thought if I could manage my birth I'd be ok but now it seems like there's just this massive threat of me lying on my back like a piece of meat while medics try out all the gadgets they can find.... I'm scared out of my mind now, when I hadn't been before. It's great to read of so many good experiences... how do I avoid this whole epidural thing?!

mondayschild · 12/10/2010 00:16

I was induced at 41+5 - everything kicked off after the first pessary so no drip, no further interventions and 9lb 2oz DS was born eight hours later without me needing any stitches. I just used TENS and G&A for pain relief. I had been really reluctant to be induced for many of the reasons already set out in this thread, but in the end I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

I think that staying mobile after I had the pessary did help - spent quite a while walking up and down stairs, and around the hospital grounds. It may have been down to luck though, and perhaps DS just decided it was about time he put in an appearance after all!

Good luck everyone Smile
