Told off for breastfeeding on the bus...

.. by a right miserable cow.

I'd just undone my coat and was sorting out my tops, and she said, "excuse me, but you can't do that on here."

I said, 'erm... yes I can.'

She then proceeded to tell me I was disgusting and went to the driver to complain. She asked him if it was ok to 'get your boobs out and breastfeed on the bus.'

he said it was and she railed at me some more about it being disgusting.

That's when the rest of the people on the bus jumped to my defence Grin
There were about 12 other people on the bus and all but two at least told her to shut up. Two nice old men told her that if it bothered her that much she should get off the bus, and that if she'd kept her mouth shut, no one would have noticed and that she was a disgrace.

Another lady told her it was the most natural thing in the world and infinitely preferable to a poor baby crying because he was hungry.

The nasty cow then kept saying that the country was going to the dogs and it was disgraceful etc. etc. (I was just sat smirking at her) but every time she opened her mouth, the whole bus tutted and told her to shut up.

As she got of the bus, she once again told told me I should be ashamed and that I probably get off on it (I was I were joking) and she then told the driver it was disgusting (the man behind her told her to shut up again Grin) and the driver said, 'the only thing that's disgusting is your attitude.'

It was brilliant Grin A perfect example of just how kind and decent most people are. I can defend myself, but I didn't need to, because all those lovely people did it for me, better than I could have done.

One woman, as she got off, even said it was so good to see me feeding DS.

Needless to say, I thanked them all profusely, but I'd like to say again, thank you, fellow bus passengers for standing up for me. It means a great deal.

Yay! Fantastic that people told her to shut up! Grin

mustdash · 14/11/2011 17:09

That's brilliant. Loveliest thing I've heard all day (apart from the horrid lady bit) and I've actually had a nice day, so that's saying something.

Aren't people just gorgeous (most of the time).

Wow Shock

That sounds incredible. I am so pleased for you and actually for all of us, and our babies.

Nice one Smile

MrsChemist · 14/11/2011 17:09

Oh and I wasn't exposing myself. Even DS couldn't see my boob and he was feeding from it, so she never even saw a flash of side boob, let alone nipple, she was just being a busy body.

I may have called her a miserable baggage as a parting shot (which was delicate of me. I wanted to call her worse)

I absolutely detest confrontation (I'm a massive wuss) so I was a little shaken, but I know I was doing nothing wrong, so was confident enough to tell her that I categorically could feed anywhere I wanted.

Even though it was a pretty shitty thing to happen, it's made me feel good. Smile

I just hope the miserable bitch doesn't spout her stupid views to someone who is less confidant about feeding.

How wonderful that so many people stood up for you!!

And good on you for your initial response too. Sometimes the best response is the shortest!

RightUpMyRue · 14/11/2011 17:25

A whole bus full of BF supporting members of the public! Shock I almost can't believe it.

Good for them. Smile

gallicgirl · 14/11/2011 17:28

Fabulous Grin

I thought it was going to be a moan about negative attitudes but was actually the opposite. Which part of the country do you live in?

reallytired · 14/11/2011 17:33

That is brilliant news.

I think the driver and the passengers were fab supporting you breastfeeding your baby. I think you should write to the bus company to tell them about how brilliant the driver is.

MrsChemist · 14/11/2011 17:38

I live in the NW and I've never struggled for company on the buses. People are generally very friendly, down to earth people, who aren't afraid of striking up a conversation with all and sundry on the bus.

I was thinking about writing to the bus company, because I can imagine the woman firing off a "disgusted from Bury" type letter to the bus company, when the bus driver was just sticking up for me. I wouldn't want him to get into trouble.

Fabulous. What a horrible woman. I used to discreetly feed my kids everywhere - once at parents' evening whilst chatting to the (female) teacher, and certainly on trains and buses if necessary.

Agree with writing to the bus company to praise their driver for supporting breast feeding Smile

nannyl · 14/11/2011 17:44

fab story Smile

MrsChemist · 14/11/2011 17:46

I will write a letter. Never thought I'd write to First Bus company praising them. When I have to get a bus, I can usually be found at the bus stop, scowling and mentally writing a lengthy diatribe about how shoddy their service is Grin

Himalaya · 14/11/2011 17:46

ahhh. what a nice story (apart from the miserable cow). Definitely write and give appreciation for the bus driver.

Bibbo · 14/11/2011 17:52

great story! could it be dinosaurs like her are finally approaching extinction :D I think a letter to praise the driver is a really good idea

Tinkerisdead · 14/11/2011 17:58

What a lovely lovely story and even more heartwarming that lots of men stuck up for you too when many get sorely embarrassed.

pinklaydee · 14/11/2011 18:00

You should have sprayed her!
That's not nice to be confronted like that. Women can really be their own worst enemies, can't they? You never hear about men complaining about public bf-ing, it's always women.

exoticfruits · 14/11/2011 18:05

So heartening they stood up for you. I am just waiting to to hear similar and I shall let rip.

bemybebe · 14/11/2011 18:13

great story indeed

SingingSands · 14/11/2011 18:18

That is brilliant. You must have felt 10 feet tall when everyone stuck up for you and your baby!
