how thoughtful of you op.it actually upset me when mil sent dh a birthday card that said of all the sons in the world you are the best....3 months after our son died i'm sure she ment no harm but it really hurt

Thanks.I have deliberately selected a card which doesn't say 'hope this is the best birthday'.
I would say something like "thinking of you. Look after yourself and hope you have a good day".
'Thinking of you on your birthday' in a blank card with a nice picture on the front.
When I leave a birthday message on a bereaved friend's FB (I have a large network of bereaved parents as friends) I put something like 'I hope today is kind to you'Or 'have a good day and do something nice'I never do the 'happy Birthday' thing
