DD ate some mud earlier...

Sorry if this is in the wrong topic...

I was stopping my son throwing stones earlier (!) so didn't realise my daughter (13 months)had a mouthful of soil until it was too late.

I know everyone jokes about children eating mmud and it not doing them any harm - I'm sure I ate mud when I was little, but I'm just having a little panic...is there anything I should be doing?

Scary thing is she seemed to like it...

It's perfectly normal, have a look out for worms in the next couple of weeks though.

My DS threw a tantrum today and refused to walk along the pavement (18mo). I ignored him and to get my attention, lay down, on his tummy, on a gutter and licked it....

I look forward to a week of nasty nappies...! grin

LOL @ frazzles! Mmm, gutter! I'll rest safe in the knowledge that somebody, somewhere is "enjoying" dodgy nappies too.

Thanks for the replies.

LOL!! My dd was always doing stuff like that when she was wee! her favourite was to lick cars!!!!!!!! Aaaarrggghhh!!! She was always there licking away just before I got to her! But she is now nearly 7 and never ill!! her immune systme must take some beating!

FatSeal Sun 21-Mar-10 21:36:20

Laughing at the gutter-licking attention-seeking too grin

Try not to freak- my friend caught her 6mo licking the pram wheels in their hall and nothing happened, ditto when my dd was 18m and tottering along on her reins, she got a Malteser up off the pavement and ate it as I scrabbled in her mouth for it. I was convinced she would be violently ill afterwards, but nothing! I think they're much tougher than you think. I was also a dirt eater when small, and it didn't seem to harm me either.

Hope yours gets away with it too

they will be fine, i once drank a puddle i was so thirsty

SmithyTheBounder Sun 21-Mar-10 21:37:28

The day DD was born, DS gave her a 'present' in the garden of a soily plant pot in her mouth. She suffered no ill effects.

PavlovtheCat Sun 21-Mar-10 21:40:02

DD ate some mud from her shoe while in the car today hmm, she has been running around a garden belonging to a family with a dog. I am anticipating a potential dodgy belly grin. There really isn't much you can do now.

ButterPie Sun 21-Mar-10 21:48:25

DD1 used to enjoy licking bus stops. I used to pull her away and maniacally grin and say loudly "oh, that will do your immune system good!" and hope nobody saw

Jamieandhismagictorch Sun 21-Mar-10 21:52:58

I used to eat mud when I was little. I have a vivid memory of doing it at school. Quite a creamy clay soil, as I recall ....

PavlovtheCat Sun 21-Mar-10 21:53:46

oh yes, mud pies. I made a lot of those!

Karoleann Sun 21-Mar-10 22:02:31

DS1 ate a worn once and then a few weeks later a woodlouse. DS2 ate DS1's poo when he was 13months, I almost threw up. He seemed to like it too and showed no ill effects. Its just a very horrible stage x

MERLYPUSS Sun 21-Mar-10 22:29:39

DT2 eats most things. He ate the arse end of a wood lice, the wallpaper, carpet fluff, crusty stuff from under the dishwasher, and this morning last nights tea that I'd missed sweeping up 'What are you eating DT2?' 'Din din Mummy'. Sheesh. Kids.

My ds4 has just drunk the contents of the toilet brush holder at playgroup. shock whilst I was changing his 2 year old brother in the toilets. I am REALLLY panicking cos he's just got over 2 chest infections and the last thing he needs is another.

He was even sick a little after drinking it (although at least it looked clean and no poo or stuff in there).

I'm hoping he doesn't get sick again his daddy is going to kill me if he finds out. confused

Christ, mine (15 mo) eats dirt all the time. It was yesterday when I looked up from Mumsnet allowed her some unstructured playtime, and realised she'd taken off her nappy and had a pellet of poo in her mouth that I started to worry.

So far so good, though.

StarExpat Mon 22-Mar-10 13:02:14

ewww to so much of this! My ds eats dirt but spits it out and blows raspberries until it's all out and digs around inside with his fingers... but not sure why he always tries it anyway in the first place! (17 months).

mixedraceparents - I'm a huge enormous worrier, so disregard me if you want as you have 4 dc and I only have 1 and just tend to over react about everything blush but toilet brush holder probably has remnants of what was on the brush - which is likely cleaning stuff/bleach - right? Since he was sick afterward - probably good that it's out but I'd still ask a doctor in case it's something poisonous.
I'm sure people will tell me I'm over reacting... but I'd be worried about that!

Asana Mon 22-Mar-10 17:46:48

I found my 10mo DS sucking on a filthy sharp little stone/pebble today at playgroup, likely dragged in under someone's shoe! I managed to extract it from his mouth just before he swallowed it, thank goodness! I don't even want to think what could have been on it, given that when I took it out of his mouth, brownish stuff was still flaking off it. Hoping it was just mud but can't stop thinking about the numerous foxes that patrol our local streets and the tendency for people to leave dog shit lying around on the pavements! shudder

mixedraceparents Mon 22-Mar-10 18:13:41

omg I never even thought of that start I ws thinking just of poo now I am REALLY REALLY worrying

Baby hs been fine all day and sleeping now but I might just pop him to the doc tomorrow

EggyAllenPoe Mon 22-Mar-10 18:18:39

DD still eats mud at every opportunity - which does motivate me to sweep the kitchen more often i suppose. robustly healthy as you expect...

MERLYPUSS Mon 22-Mar-10 19:28:21

DT2 was drinking from the washed (but not anti-bac'd) potty tonight. I'd just slooshed out a wee and he was licking the remnants. Oh well, at least wee is sterile.

StarExpat Mon 22-Mar-10 19:32:57

Sorry mixedraceparents !!! Sorry! I'm probably over reacting!! I am a big time worrier about stuff like that.
You could call NHS direct and tell them what happened and maybe they could give you better advice since they know what they are talking about and I don't. I just wanted you to think about it just in case but don't want to make you worry.

weaselm4 Mon 22-Mar-10 20:35:43

I'm not sure whether to laugh or heave!

DD is fine today, incidentally. She has always enjoyed floor food, so I think she's got a pretty good immune system!

Her brother likes to drink the bathwater after he's wee'd in it. Lovely. As you say MERLYPUSS, at least wee is sterile.

Do hope your little one is OK mixedraceparents (and all the other eaters-of-dodgy-things grin)

mixedraceparents Tue 23-Mar-10 14:16:13

It's ok star lol he is fine and I was worrying just as much because after swine flu, vomiting bug and chest infections x 2 I just couldn't handle him getting sick again. So I'm a lot more over protective than I might otherwise be!

But I'm sure his immune system is better for it grin

StarExpat Tue 23-Mar-10 15:27:34

oh, good mixedraceparents! Glad he is ok.
Glad your DD is ok to weasel!
