Edward? Talk to me about nicknames

Another name we both really like is Edward. We would use Ted as a nickname.

The problem is Ted doesn't go with our surname as would sound a lot like Teddy.

Is that issue?

Don't suppose it would matter unless you were going to plan on using Ted as a nickname/proper name, i.e the one he'd use at school. If he's only going to be called Ted at home, highly unlikely you'll be saying your surname as well IYSWIM?

I have an Edward.
He gets called Edward by everybody except me!
I call him Ned, which was the reason for clling him Edward.
It's a pretty versatile name, so he can be called Ed when he gets older or carry on being Edward. I sometimes call him Neddy Nula but that's just me!

Does your sur name end in a Y? so say Teddy Murphy? or begin with a T., like Teddy Taylor?

Either sound ok to me.

The answer is sometimes to Edward, sometimes to Ned.
I took neddy to tumbletots and the lady there called him Ted, and I told her that that's one name we never call him, but it's all lovely though IMO. But I would say that!

Ps I wanted to call him Hugo but DH didn't like it.

If he's going to be known as Ned, advise him never, ever to move to Scotland - see here

Depends if he is only going to called Ted at home with family or if Ted is going to be his name for all situations.

My DS1 has a longer name and is always known by his nn which is the short version of it. All his books, pegs etc at achool have the nn and the registered is called with his nn.

BTW I love Edward. DS2 was going to be Edward nn Ed or Eddie but it didn't suit him so he got something else!

Surname Rhymes with Sea.

If you introduce him as Edward, and call him Ted, deesn't it confuse people. How do they know what to call him?

Does it work, using a nn at home and the longer name at school?

DS is baptised Edward, but we wrote Ned on the birth announcement card. I love the name Edward but we decided to choose the nickname for him rather than everyone else calling him one of the many alternatives.
Grandpa calls him Nedward. Family call him Neddles!! Friends call him Neddy or Mr Ned. The permutations go on and I thought I had made life simpler! He is known as Ned at school but passport is Edward. Helpful? Long winded? Yes! Sorry!

My ds has mostly been known by the short form of his name (think Charles/Charlie, although that's not his name), but I like his formal/full name to be used on anything official, so that's what he was registered at school, the doctors etc. Now he is older he has decided to use his short name at school too (we changed schools last year). I usually introduce him with the formal name if it's a formal occasion and the short form otherwise. It doesn't seem to be a problem. I think if you use a nn that is very associated with the formal name then no one will be confused, so Edward/Ted shouldn't be a problem, although I guess some people might ask if the Ted is short for Theodore.

think it's such a shame Ned is not acceptable north of the border. I LOVE it.... keener on Ned than Edward tbh.

Ed is ok, Ted too. Don't like Eddie or Teddy.

My best friend when I was growing up was an Edward but was always known as Ward. He was lovely and I think it's a very strong nickname.

If DD had been a boy she would have been Edward (Ned). Still have it in reserve for dc2. Lovely name.

When he was small DS had a friend called Teddy. I loved that name. Now he's 16 he's had to tell everyone that he wants to be known as Edward.
