I would really to call our little girl (due in May) Flora... Is this a nice name or will you always think of the margarine and that she needs a sister called Clover..

i really really liked it...then i read what you said about margarine and thought 'hmmm'.
having said that, i still think its a nice name on its own i know a girl called Fern, which IMO is a beautiful name too. x

I do like it, it's very pretty. But there are jokes to be made about being spreadable etc.

I think quite a lot of people will think margerine - it would but me off. Do you like Florence?

plumymummy Sun 14-Mar-10 21:52:36

I do really like Florence, and it was my great grandmas name..but it's become quite popular (i know thats really fussy of me) and I don't want to name the baby something other people we know might have.......not at all awkward. I do like Fern buts my cousins baby is called it!

I think it's lovely and people probably think margarine once, then forget all about that once they meet her. I have a DN Flora and it really suits her. Go for it!

I love both Flora & Clover but would never use them due to the margarine / butter connections

One of dd's best friends is Flora - and she is a lovely, bubbly, friendly, happy child. She exudes sunshine, and her name really suits her. She says she has very seldom been teased about the margarine.

Love Flora.

Absolutely LOVE Flora.

Flora is great, FloraRedbin would be nice too.

I love the name Flora. I have a Scottish friend whose DD is a Flora, tbh I never even thought of the margarine in relation to her until I read MN threads on the name!

Floras OK, you could go the whole hog and call her Butter.

Flora was my other choice, its fresh, happy classic,dh who doesnt share my upbringing could only think of margerine.

it depends on what kind of family you are. We love our dds name, but I really think she would have made a great Flora as well

I don't think "margarine" but do think "vaginal flora".

So, no. Sorry.

MrsvWoolf Mon 15-Mar-10 10:14:07

Love it, it's slightly quaint name.
Although it was my cat's name and people did mention the margarine.

plumymummy Mon 15-Mar-10 10:17:14

Laughing at vagina flora-Gut flora would have been a slightly less yukky alternative wink

Thankyou for all your help! I think I might see what she looks like when she comes out-if she is a hefty bruiser maybe it's not the name for her!

StiffUpperHip Mon 15-Mar-10 13:40:40

I have a Flora. What's the problem with margarine? We love the name, and if you do, then go for it. She's Flora Jane, nicknames Flora Borealis, Flossy Bossy, Flossy Jo (our favourite!) and of course lots of people call her Flora the Explorer. But mostly she's just Flora.

Oh, and at 9lb 9oz she was a hefty bruiser at birth, but a lovely looking girl, not hefty at all. I don't think it's a name that carries "image" issues as much as some I can think of.

Both Flora & Clover are beautiful names .... can't stand margarine !!!!!
