Tip of the day

Never ask a child IF they need the loo... moodlum

Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

4 weeks to go, what do you think of these girls names?

(32 Posts)
Yes.

I actually think her mum regrets her choice.

My own name has a "t" in the middle which is frequently dropped and makes my name sound really awful. My mother regrets calling me it for this reason.

I was just thinking, for Aneira, if potential DD would find it a PITA she could go by Annie as a NN?
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 30-Jun-09 14:43:55
does she hate her name for that reason fimbo?
I know a girl of 12 called Aneira, she gets very upset as people either can't say her name or spell it wrongly.

DH has now vetoed Greta as he says it's too harsh sounding angry
Hi !!

I Like Greta, very pretty. grin In fact the more I look at it, the more I love it!!

I'm thinking that as you had to put how to pronounce the others may have indicate problems with others pronouncing and spelling the name later in life - ie register at school, every time they are asked their name they'll have to say "Spelt ....."

I'd go with Greta!!
Don't like any of them sorry but Greta is better (!) than the others.

Cassie is nice.
Iona - don't like it personally but at least it looks real.
Amira
Eloise

Greta is the only one that is easily pronounced IMO.

The other names may mean a lifetime of mis-pronounced names by teachers/employers etc.................

And.don't really like Greta either. Sorry.

(Although when you explain the last one Aneira, it does sound pretty)

Love Greta.
Eiliona.

Really don't like Greta, Casia will always be mispronounced (unless you are somewhere the name is usual), Aneira... no, just don't like it.
i know a Casia (aged 4? 5?) and she is always called Casia. No probs re pronunciation that I'm aware of, and it's a topic that her mum and I have discussed as both our children have 'unusual' names.

Greta sounds a bit harsh, I think. The other 2 are pretty.

In any case, pronunciation issues aren't the end of the world - nor are you exempted from them by having a 'common' name. I'm a Sarah but still get called Sara all the time!!
love Greta and Aneira

Only like Greta from your list, sorry.

Prefer Cassia to Casia as this reminds me of Casio. It isn't made up- I've come across it before.

I like Eliana but not Eiliona.
Greta is okay.
The hills are alive ............

I like Greta.

Went to write Greta and wrote Great!

Greta is cool....
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 29-Jun-09 18:19:37
Well it is spelt like Daniela, but I would personally say it An-YE-la rather than ANnie-ella.

and Kurt and Brigitta....
Greta is lovely...

Not keen on the pronunciation of Casia but like Cassia or Cassie

Don't like the others - sorry

Although I like the sound of Aniela, it's a bit like Daniella without the D sin't it??

I love Anissa but a friend has called her daughter this so I can't really

or Anissa....i love that. I also like Dasha and Liesl...
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 29-Jun-09 18:00:50
I really like Greta. And I also think Casia is nice (although everyone I've known with that name spelt it with a K - Kasia)
I don't really like the other two (sorry), how about Aniela? A bit similar to the last 2, and v nice IMO.

it has hasn't it boodle!! it's ok I can take it, although Casia is definitely off the list after the Loyd Grossman comment!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 29-Jun-09 17:55:30
crikey, sorry your list has been slated quite so viciously OP...

i like Casia pronounced Casha but am wondering if it would ever be pronounced that way....is there another way of spelling it?

Aneira sounds like an attempt to feminise the Welsh boys' name Aneurin

if they're not made up they look it
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 29-Jun-09 17:35:31
They all look made up apart from Greta. Your pronounciation of Casia sounds like Loyd Grossman. I don't like any of them.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 29-Jun-09 17:24:14
I don't like Casia and Aneira simply because I would pronounce them incorrectly, so you and then your daughter will forever be correcting people and than can be a bore all round.
Eiliona, probably less problem with pronunciation but there will be spelling issues.
The more I see (and say) Greta the more I like it. I think it unusual but simple and classy.

Not keen on any, sorry. But like Leona.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 29-Jun-09 17:14:19
they're not made up, honest!
I only like Greta from this list.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 29-Jun-09 17:12:25
I'm a fan of unusual names but Greta is the only one which sounds not too made up to me. Sorry for being boring.
