I posted the other day asking for middle name advice for my daughter (due in October). I was v set on Florence. BUT then I read the 'one name' thread and saw someone had mentioned Elin. I just can't stop thinking about it, I read it and instantly thought 'there's our name'! Soooooo which do you think is better ...

Florence Elizabeth
Elin Rose

... or another combination of the above that I haven't thought of?

DS (almost 2) has a Gaelic two syllable name beginning with T. Surname Jones.

Thanks in advance.

I prefer Elin Rose or Ellen Rose.

I also think Ellen Elizabeth sounds quite nice.

Elin Elizabeth looks a bit odd though.

I know an Elin but she is Norwegian. If you are bog-standard British I prefer Ellen.

Florence is lovely but you will have an uphill battle to stop it being shortened to Flo (which is awful) or Florrie (which is a little bit wet).

...X Rose Jones sounds strange, therefore I would go with Elin Elizabeth or Elin Florence.

They are both lovely names and go well with your surname IMO!

Elin is the Welsh spelling so if you have a Gaelic sounding DS then I think it might be more appropriate than Florence which to me sounds very English.
I do like Elin Rose the two names flow really well together
and Elin Jones obviously sounds right as it's Welsh

...having said the above, there is one problem with the name Elin...your surname is quite short and so is Elin. Without a middle name a longer firstname would flow better with your surname (i.e. Florence).

Thank you.

Mrsnoname, I wondered the same about 'Rose Jones'. I'm not sure Elin Elizabeth or Elin Florence are quite right though, gah!

Ninedragons, the reading I've done suggests that although Elin is most usually a Scandinavian name, it also has Gaelic roots, as we do (hence my son's name) so I'd feel like I could use it if that makes sense. I don't like Ellen at all. I realise this makes me very fussy!

Gah, I complained for ages last time that choosing a boys name was v hard and I had loads of lovely girls names just waiting to be used. Now I'm having a girl I can't remember any of them, and can't make my mind up LOL

Sorry, more replies since I replied.

Thank you, I think I need to think a bit more. I do love the name, and had a similar 'have to have it' moment with my son's name. I do want it to sound good too though. Gah!

I think Elin Elizabeth Jones would be lovely.

I've just realised why I think that Elin Jones sounds right - I know one in RL. Lovely woman!

I much prefer Florence as a first name and think Florence Rose would be a beautiful combination. If you go for Elin, I would spell it Ellen as suggested. Good luck.
