Tip of the day

Don't get in a panic over Christmas. Keep a box and put a little in it every week - small gifts, wine, nibbles, napkins etc. This way, you'll be more relaxed and less skint in December! keriku

Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

none.
My 3 year old son is called Magnus. We totally loved it fron the start. I've recently heard of 2 other Magnuses in the area and to be honest, was slightly disappointed as I loved him being the only one.

I think Magnus goes very well with your other kids' names indeed. I've heard of a Magnus/Ivan combo which I like. I'm planning to call my 2nd son Conan. Magnus has Scots/Scandinavian/Classical links so can fit with lots of different names. We chose it in the Classical sense (meaning great) but most people have assumed we chose it in a Scottish sense due to me having Scottish relations. There is a Saint Magnus who was a king in the Orkneys. To me it is a noble and 'big' name which suits my son as he is very big and tall with a very full on personality!
ah, it's a breeze when you're used to it! I trained as a stilt-walker in my youth grin

Ah, well I wouldn't count your chickens there, to be honest.

We have one dark-haired, brown-eyed, olive-skinned child and one blond, blue-eyed, pink and white-skinned child.

Amazing what genes will throw up. But I think Magnus will work anyway, and is fine with your other children's names.

OT but how do you walk in those shoes?! Gorgeous but a bit death-defying.
I think we are pretty much decided on Magnus!!!!

now - a big ask, I know: but if you look at my pics you will see my children. They look pretty similar so we can more or less assume that next baby will bear a resemblance to them.

1. Do you think a child with these looks will suit the name Magnus?
2. Does the name Magnus sound good with Phoenix and Cassian?

thankee kindly smile

I had an uncle Magnus, though he lived in Dundee I think he was from Shetland or Orkney where I seem to think it isn't such an unusal name (though could be making that up!)

one 40 year old Magnus in Germany. Not shortened to anything.

I would never have thought of shortening to Gus though

several in Sweden (mostly middle-aged)

none in the UK
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 23-Jun-09 16:06:29
Only one in the UK, 1 year old, loads in Scandinavia.

How on earth can Gus be Magnus?? Surely they're all either Angus or Augustus (or Augusta, I know a female Gus...)

Magnus would def be shortened to Mags, like Magne in a-ha back in the days.
I know one who is 3 years. Scottish/Danish parentage.

Nice name. And Gus is nice too.

Don't know any, but really want to have my own one (if indeed this baby is a boy!) Fanjolina, my surname is Noble and I love the idea of him being Magnus Noble.
Oh, and 'Sporticus' grin
Magnus:

One in his mid-teens (was at school with 2 others I didn't know)

One 7yr old

Gus:

One about 6yrs old

One about 45yrs old

(both short for Angus tho)

I have 10yr old and 7 yr old and know no Magnus's (we're near Newcastle). Do know a Gus at swimming which I quite like and think is unusual, he;s about 6, never thought if it was short for Magnus or not. I like it.

One aged one.
Oi! Gus is a fantastic name! I've got a 9 yr old Gus
but yes I think Gus is an inevitable nickname, I can't think of many boys who would be happy with Mags.

If you're concerned about popularity, have you been to the Bounty site? I would never pick a child's name without checking there first.

It will tell you where it comes on the list of children's names for the previous year and whether it is rising or falling in popularity.

yes, I would have thought angus = gus more than Magnus. I reckon Magnus would get abbreviated to Mags, if anything?
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 18-Jun-09 22:01:30
I usually think of Gus as short for Angus of which I know quite a few but Magnus I know none personally. Like it though
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 18-Jun-09 21:59:59
Several. but half my family is from Norway. Personally i love the name. Had never heard it before my cousin called his son it.
