Love this name and think it's a good choice as a sister for Violet as it's quaintly oldfashioned and delicate yet blowsy at the same time, like Ruby, but not as mainstream. I have come across 2 or 3 in the last couple of years, a good sign, in my opinion. What do you think?

My DH loves it. A name I heard recently and which I've come to love is Coral.

AbbeyA · 03/05/2008 08:23

Sorry-hate it.

NurkMagiggy · 03/05/2008 08:27

I know one who is 14. That's the only one I know.
I think it's a lovely name.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 03/05/2008 08:38

I think it's sweet.

Rosylily · 03/05/2008 08:39

I think it is lovely. And goes well with Violet yes.

AdamAnt · 03/05/2008 08:41

I love Pearl. Gorgeous name IMO

NurkMagiggy · 03/05/2008 08:42

Gah everyone nicked Violet, I had it down 5 years ago then I had a boy...

it's his middle name though.

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 03/05/2008 08:45

Not for me. Sorry.

Moomin · 03/05/2008 08:46

'Violet and Pearl' makes me want to sing it to the tune of 'Diamonds and Pearls' by Prince showing me age.

I like the sentiment and it's a pretty name written down; I just find it a hard name to say, actually. Depends on your pronunciation: Pahhhrl?; Purl?; or Peeehrl (if you're Scouse)?

Tommy · 03/05/2008 08:48

Pearl is better than Coral IMO. It's pretty and delicate

tummytickler · 03/05/2008 10:52

I love it - my 3 yr old dd is called Pearl and the only other one i know is 90 and comes to Pearls nursery once a week to read to the children!
I find people either love it or hate it!

AllieBongo · 03/05/2008 11:10

I think it is pretty, it just makes me think of spongebob..

Pavlovthecat · 03/05/2008 11:13

...necklace
. Sorry thats what comes to mind

MrsMattie · 03/05/2008 11:17

Not keen. makes me think of pearl necklaces

alfiesbabe · 03/05/2008 11:39

Nice associations - precious things etc but sorry just don't think Pearl looks or sounds pretty

WinkyWinkola · 03/05/2008 11:53

Great name, Pearl. I love it. I loved Ruby more but then everyone else did too. Pearl is very elegant and simple.

DH won't have a Pearl though. Pearly necklace, schoolboy smut reason. Ridiculous.

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 03/05/2008 17:00

I know OF one. She's five. I've heard of somebody using it as a mn, but that's not as confident...

I do really like the name Pearl. I wouldn't use it myself but I'd think reespek if I met the Mum of a pearl.

slinkiemalinki · 04/05/2008 20:26

Love it!

tassisssss · 04/05/2008 20:27

not great in parts of scotland where it can be pronounced, with a lovely rolling r sound, "Peril"

ByTheSea · 04/05/2008 20:28

It's my mother's name. And she's lovely.

Shitemum · 04/05/2008 20:28

A bit 1950's.
I knew a hippy family with 3 girls named Pearl, Ruby and Amber.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2008 20:29

I had wanted to call DD1 this.

I actually took inspiration from 'The Scarlett Letter'. Hester Prynne called her daughter that because she was 'one bought at great cost.'

But DH disuaded me.

I like it, though.

Janni · 04/05/2008 20:31

It's pretty, but very old-fashioned.

mazzystar · 04/05/2008 20:33

I think its a nice enough name, but a bit deliberately trendy at the moment.

Moosma · 04/05/2008 20:36

I had a horrid aunt Pearl who I never liked, but even if it wasn't for her I don't think I'd like it, to me it sounds clumsy. Violet is lovely though
