The Met Office held a public vote to compile the next list for naming storms. Did anyone take part?

The results are: Abigail, Barney, Clodagh, Desmond, Eva, Frank, Gertrude, Henry, Imogen, Jake, Katie, Lawrence, Mary, Nigel, Orla, Phil, Rhonda, Steve, Tegan, Vernon and Wendy.

I can't quite imagine being lashed by a Nigel....

I can't quite imagine being lashed by a Nigel.... Grin

helentheheron · 20/10/2015 16:55

Oh dear God I do NOT want to be lashed by a Nigel!

Orla fits I think - sounds rather "whirly" to me.

Vernon is the name of man who spends his leisure time building garden sheds. More of a constructor than a wrecker.

I read this with interest - having lived in the US I am used to naming storms and I do think it works for making people more aware. I didn't actually realise it was a new thing here though. I remember Hurricane Charlie from the late 80s (or maybe very early 90s) making landfall in Northern Ireland and causing a small amount of damage and bringing some debris to the beach near us. I'm not convinced by some of the names though - I think they need to be well-used names which are familiar to all to really work and I'm not sure this whole list falls into that category. (Clodagh, Imogen & Tegan for instance aren't really massively common names throughout the whole of the UK) I like Barney, Desmond, Frank, Mary & Wendy the best.

EdithWeston · 20/10/2015 18:39

I think we've named storms for yonks, but I'd not heard of a vote for which names go on the list before.

A-big-gail has to be the most apt, surely Grin

What on earth happened there? I only pressed the big button once, honestly Blush

EdithWeston · 20/10/2015 21:09

I've seen lots of duplicate posts this evening. Usually I'd assume it's someone whose phone slipped, but I'm beginning to think there must be a gremlin running round MNHQ (possibly called Steve).

HackerFucker22 · 20/10/2015 22:30

Wendy = Windy surely???

It does of course. I realised that shortly after I posted. Not on form tonight!

Ah, more gremlins up thread. Not just me then

AuntieStella · 10/11/2015 18:31

"I can't quite imagine being lashed by a Nigel...."

So you've never been to the Conservative Party Conference then.....?

meditrina · 17/11/2015 19:40

Did anyone take part in the vote?

And do they keep using the list until all names have gone, or will there be another vote for next season?

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/11/2015 20:18

Why are they naming storms? I thought only hurricanes were given that honour.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 17/11/2015 20:27

How do you pronounce clodagh?

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/11/2015 20:37

klo-da

klo to rhyme with slow

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 17/11/2015 20:50

Thanks

eloquentlyineffable · 17/11/2015 20:54

Was interested to see Abigail as it is my name - don't know whether to be offended or flattered!

PurpleGreenAvocado · 18/11/2015 13:28

I think that one storm should be called Heinz....

PurpleGreenAvocado · 18/11/2015 13:29

Bertrand Grin

A vicar friend is called Nigel, he says it'll make a change from being compared to the curate on Outnumbered.
